Enter the parental confusion...play sets, toy box. figurines oh my
Playsets: necessary to enter story mode where you are playing in the figurines world ie: you need that little crystal-looking statue to get there and it is not included with individual figurines
Toybox: alternate mode of playing where you can create things...different figurines have different playing options there.
Figurines: sold as individual pieces or in pairs (Frozen sisters), these complement characters you already own in Story mode and can enter their worlds. (Remember only people from that world can enter their world - no cross world visiting) OR you can use them independently in Toy box mode and everybody can play together depending on your gaming system.
to date the Playsets available that I have found are:
. the starter pack with the worlds of : Monster University, Metropolis (The Incredibles) and The Carribean (from Pirates)
the Cars world
the Toy Story world
the Lone Ranger world
There are many figurines available that I have not found have their corresponding world available yet (12/2013) I am hoping that Disney will make these worlds available soon and that I won't have to repeat purchasing figurines to get that precious little crystal world holding device (cause I won't) :)
So buyer, beware - read your packaging carefully - know what you have, where you can go and what you're expecting to be able to do with it. ie: if you have wii - remember only 1 can play in world mode at a time and only 2 can play in toy box mode at a time. etc... know what your gaming system allows :)
For the first day or so of playing, she was happy enough that it was simply Cars. But I noted that after those initial gaming periods, she began requesting older playsets, like The Incredibles. I wondered what was wrong.
She explained and I will translate the 6 year old's explanation: being that you control cars, there is a lot racing to be done. Whether an actual side by side race, or one where you chase down an errant vehicle, and she does not understand racing. She is not very good at racing and loses every race that the game throws at her. Her frustration begins to build until reaches the point where she'd rather play another playset or Toy Box mode.
As the adult I have raced with her and tried to let her win, but unfortunately, the opponents (like Chick Hicks) aren't so nice. Every race comes off as a do-or-die, must-win situation and each racer is very competitive and will use the sideways bash move to get you out of the way. I have tried to beat the race and even I found myself growing frustrated at the opponents. I wish there was a way to "dial down" the race aggressiveness.
I think she is a little young for this title, which surprised me based on the characters and theme set. She is enjoying the time spent around Radiator Springs, but each new 'quest' brings on a new race and she wants no more of that.
Yes, it's nice to build my own little world with my best friend Vanellope von Schweetz, I do enjoy that. I enjoy that very much. If that's what you want, too, than you very well could have a bunch of fun. You'll just have to look up YouTube tutorials on how to actually understand and get anywhere in Disney Infinity, and how to get sparks to buy/unlock items to use in your own custom world. BUT, my big fuss is that I feel like I was duped. I read all the details before my purchase and it all just gave off the impression that it was a bit more than it is. Give me a race through Sugar Rush or something.. a few more items specific to Wreck-It Ralph would even help. Another reviewer had mentioned that it's only a real investment for main characters (I forget which ones were mentioned) but non-blockbuster hits get considerably less attention here - I agree.
In summation, every Toy Box character should be created equal or it should be clearly stated, i.e.; "no specific toy box game for this character".. At least let the price reflect that, because if you get what you pay for than why is there less content on this character for the same price as others with way more? Otherwise you don't get what you pay for.
P.S. - I've been to other stores looking for this and employees have told me that these )specifically Wreck It Ralph and Vanellope) aren't in production anymore. So if you really just want to guide either one of them around and are fine with not having any other related content, than pick it up now. Otherwise pass on it.
