What a disappointment. Got the Mavic Mini. Tried my LG K4 and Moto E5Play (all with Android8) and didnt even find the App. Downloaded from website and tried to install it with no success.
Then used my Pixel XL2, newer phone with Android 10 and it downloaded the App. Also updated the controller with latest version. BUT when trying to use the App: "RC cannot connect to mobile device". Really?
Then I tried my friends iphone to make sure its not a cable or remote control issue, and yes it works! Not buying another phone just so i can use the drone, already tried 3!!! different smartphones. This issue must get solved ASAP or its a Return like for so many other people too I heard.
The gimbal is impeccably smooth. It's shocking just how steady this holds. I can be 100m up in a 20kph wind and the video looks like a still image - it's that steady.
The drone is very sophisticated. It has so many failsafe measures, return to home is very accurate, it will warn when detecting high winds, airports, cold temperatures, GPS issues.
And it's absolutely tiny!
For fun, exploration, amateur videos and snaps it's just fantastic and great value too. If you want to do work on a semi-professional or professional level I would recommend spending more and getting a drone with manual controls and preferably a larger sensor. But for vacation shots and just having fun making videos this is the best drone out.
1 side note, it doesn't come with a carrying case. Or an extra battery.
- Non- Urban range is about 2-4 km
- Flight time 30 minutes
- Under 250 grams, don't have to register it with transport Canada or FAA
- excellent camera quality, DJI added 2.4k and 24 fps shoots which are great for filming cinematically!
- Great cinematic performance
- very good wind resistance, I was more than 300 metes up and had about 40 km/h winds, stood up perfectly.
- Poor range in urban areas (Toronto spot of testing)
- Signal breakups if you are not pointing directly at the drone
- Controler a little small, will hardly fit a phone bigger than the iPhone XR, or iPhone 11
Some tips on flying the drone to the best of its ability are to buy yourself a range extender, they help a lot, especially if you plan on flying in urban areas. To get the best performance fly it where there is no interference to the signal (No peer lines, houses), switch your phone to airplane mode ( helps with the interference, increases range), avoid sport mode, drains battery and reduces overall battery life.
Great little drone but has its minor problems, if you want a drone that will serve you better, get a Mavic air 2.
for 450$ its a steal considering how many features are packed in it!
ISSUE #1 - Airport restriction notification
For some reason I repeatedly got a notification about an airport restriction zone. The airport in question is at least a 45 minute drive from where I live and not even remotely close. I contacted DJI support about this but the issue was never resolved. It wasn't a deal breaker because the notification would go away but it was very annoying to have that pop up randomly when I was flying the drone.
ISSUE #2 - WiFi Connection
During a few of my flights suddenly the wifi would cut out, a few times I was only about 140 feet up which isn't that high. Luckily the wifi re-engaged and I was able to safely land the drone otherwise (hopefully) it would have automatically landed but not sure. I understand this happening in a busy area or if it was very high up but it was an open field and not that far away. I had taken a few pictures as well which never got saved.
ISSUE #3 - Battery drain
The battery would sometimes go from 30% down to 18% fairly quickly and then the notification would come up that you would have to land immediately. Luckily when this happened I was close to the drone but if not then it would have landed wherever.
I wish that the warning notifications from the drone would be more proactive and earlier, it seemed like I would get a warning and then all of a sudden the issue would crop up. For example with a low battery warning, it would be more helpful to have this come up and provide maybe 5 minutes or so before it automatically landed, but for me it was less than a few minutes.
At the end of the day the possibility of this being lost or damaged just seemed too high for me to stomach and as such I will buy a cheaper drone. Losing/crashing a $100 drone sucks but that happening to a $500+ drone is a really bad day. With the WiFi and battery issues I described I didn't want to chance using something that has a high chance of crashing for that cost. Another thing to note is that you always have to be very mindful of the weather and the wind, with that the amount of days you can actually fly the drone can be limited (depending of course on where you live) Although I think that DJI makes great drones this didn't meet my expectations.
Strongly recommend, especially with the 249g weight.
The only things to mention is there is little to no visibility in low light, does get taken away in higher winds, it can’t be used in no service areas, and like most, the battery life is limited. Definitely recommend getting the fly more kit if purchasing this drone as it’s only available as a package and it is extremely beneficial. Hoping they’ll release the kit on its own soon for people who purchased it solo.
All in all would purchase again ten times over. Great for traveling and going on adventures.
It's easy to use, and being under 250g you can use it without a drone pilot license in canada. The app goes on your phone and will stop you from taking off too near an airport for example. It is pretty idiot proof. If it gets lost or runs low on battery it will return home (more on this RTH mode later).
One regret: I did not purchase the "fly more" combo which comes with case and batteries. I was able to buy batteries and a hardshell case on amazon easily enough however. A single battery lasts a little over 20 minutes, vs advertised 30.
Edit: I have now crashed this drone twice, both times when the battery hit the 5 minute mark and the drone decided to land. The first time, it was 3 feet off the ground when it went straight up and hit a half dozen trees. I was able to reassemble one arm and get it flying again fine. The second time it decided to land on water and sink into the lake. I baked it in the oven to get the moisture out of the camera. 170F and 3 hours. The battery wast toast. Still flies.
A tip: there is a program by DJI called Refresh. Pay them $60 and you get to destroy two drones per year for similar amount replacement fees.
The RTH (return to home) mode has not saved my bacon so much as been a source of grief. Basically: the advertised 30 minutes is closer to 20 minutes but in reality you can only fly for 15 because if you go too close to zero the drone goes bananas.
Still, this is a great drone and fun to use.
