Excellent Action Cam with great battery life
So, like others, I’ve been a GoPro fan for many years and although I’ve had a decent experience with the cameras I’ve purchased… I kept seeing the great reviews for the DJI OSMO Action 4. Reluctantly (partly from feeling guilty like I was cheating on GoPro and partly because all my accessories are for the GoPro’s I own), I purchased one. And … I love it. Excellent quality, easy to use, camera turns on and off quickly, front touchable screen… I can go on. AND, the battery life… I have to pack two GoPro batteries and sometimes more depending on what I’m shooting, to equal the battery life on one battery for the Action 4. Now I’ve only had it a couple weeks, but I’m using it every chance I get with no issues.

I match the 10bit footage from this with my Canon R5.
No complaints and DJI service has been excellent answering questions and supporting the product.
The combo is a must for me. Having the extra batteries with the combo storage case which is also an emergency power bank when the batteries are in it is quite useful. Selfie stick is good quality and very handy having the extra magnetic mount.
CONS:
I wish it came with a combo carrying case instead of me having to buy a third party solution. I think at this price, they could include a case to keep everything together.

Il salto di qualità rispetto alle action cam precedentemente possedute è stato notevole: bei video in buona luce, gamma dinamica incrementata, ottimo bilanciamento del bianco automatico, buona stabilizzazione.
Ma utilizzandola ben presto mi sono accorto che non erano tutte rose e fiori: frequenti blocchi che costringevano a rimuovere e reinserire la batteria per sbloccare la action cam; audio non eccelso in presenza di vento; necessità di acquistare costosi accessori (vedi mediamod) anche solo per collegare un microfono esterno; batteria dalla durata misera (nonostante fossero le Enduro); eccessiva distorsione selezionando le focali più grandangolari; menu poco intuitivo e soprattutto touchscreen davvero pessimo che sembrerebbe quasi un resistivo da quanto è lento ed impreciso.
È così che mi è venuto il desiderio di cercare un prodotto che non fosse afflitto dalle stesse problematiche, ma che al contempo sfornasse ottimi video.
Fino a quel giorno, non so perché, non avevo mai preso in considerazione DJI per le action cam; conoscevo l'azienda per i droni. Poi ho visto qualche recensione della Action 3 e il mio interesse da lì è cominciato a crescere. Ma è con l'uscita della DJI Osmo Action 4 che ho deciso di fare il passo e sostituire la GoPro 11.
Mai scelta fu più indovinata.
Per sintetizzare, tutti gli spunti critici che ho mosso in riferimento alla GoPro con la DJI Action 4 semplicemente non esistono:
• sistema/software stabilissimo che mai si è impallato, dico mai. Dove con GoPro c'era sempre la spada di Damocle, il blocco poteva verificarsi all'improvviso in qualsiasi momento.
• Touchscreen posteriore più reattivo.
• Display frontale dotato anche lui di funzione touch. Essenziale per chi fa v-log e non solo per questa categoria di utilizzatori.
• Menu di un'altra categoria che consente di muoversi agevolmente e in modo più intuitivo tra le funzioni, con una grafica più accattivante e pratica.
• Stabilizzazione RockSteady a mio avviso anche superiore alla tanto decantata HyperSmooth di GoPro che in determinate condizioni produce distorsioni e artefatti ai margini del video.
• Attacco magnetico.
• Dimensioni più compatte.
• Tempo di ricarica delle batterie. infinitamente più basso rispetto a GoPro.
• Durata della batteria decisamente superiore a GoPro e soprattutto si scarica in modo più costante laddove GoPro si 'mangia' percentuale a piacimento.
• Porta USB-C che funziona anche per i microfoni e non costringe a comprare ulteriori costosi accessori.
• Bilanciamento del bianco automatico ancora più preciso di GoPro e soprattutto per le riprese sott'acqua fa la differenza, perché la resa dei colori DJI mi sembra più realistica e gradevole.
• Qualità video superiore in condizioni di poca luce e di sera.
• Fino ad oggi non ho riscontrato problemi di surriscaldamento. Generalmente registro in 4K a 60 FPS con D-Log attivato, anche clip lunghe.
Un elenco questo che non esaurisce le altre innumerevoli migliorie che questo prodotto porta con sé. Per citarne qualcuna:
• si può attivare una funzione che consente di tenere un solo display attivo (in modo da ridurre il consumo di batteria), per cui quando avviamo la registrazione e parte la visualizzazione con il display posteriore se abbiamo necessità di attivare solo il display frontale basterà fare uno swipe su quest'ultimo e automaticamente il display posteriore si spegnerà. Per tornare al display posteriore basterà procedere analogamente mediante swipe sul display posteriore.
• Da menu possiamo regolare il Noise Reduction (Riduzione Rumore), dove con GoPro non è possibile disabilitarlo né tanto meno regolarlo. Solo installando GoPro Labs e creando dei profili appositi si potrebbe intervenire sul NR, una assurdità perché costringe ad installare un firmware alternativo e obbliga a creare profili ad hoc che si potranno richiamare (uno solo alla volta) facendo 'vedere' alla GoPro un QR Code che avremo sul nostro smartphone. Procedura folle, praticabile magari dai più smanettoni, ma che non è certo appannaggio dell'utilizzatore medio oltre ad essere di una scomodità incredibile.
• Sempre da menu possiamo impostare un tempo minimo di scatto oltre ad una soglia minima e massima di ISO. Una funzione utilissima che consentirà di avere filmati fluidi anche in condizioni di luce scarsa e soprattutto eviteremo i fastidiosissimi jitter e ghosting che affliggono i filmati delle GoPro registrati con poca luce. Sono artefatti che degradano molto i filmati perché la GoPro, nel tentativo di bilanciare la scena, abbasserà il tempo ad un valore tale che i singoli frame presenteranno del mosso per cui la stabilizzazione e il software interno faranno fatica (o non riusciranno) ad allineare correttamente ogni singolo fotogramma con il risultato di un video pessimo.
• Usando la app DJI Mimo (la app che consente di comandare la nostra Action dallo smartphone) in fase di registrazione possiamo vedere in diretta ciò che la Action 4 sta inquadrando. Con GoPro forse solo con la versione 12 si sono decisi a dare questa possibilità ai loro utilizzatori, con le versioni precedenti la 12 appena premerete REC non vedrete più nulla dallo smartphone.
Dopo quel che ho detto alcuni di voi penseranno che io sia un 'hater' di GoPro, non è così. Sono un semplice utilizzatore di action cam che avendole possedute ed usate a fondo riporta le proprie esperienze d'uso.
La GoPro resta valida se filmate esclusivamente di giorno e vi serve un reparto fotografico più curato (maggiore risoluzione, scatto a raffica, star trail, ecc.). Per ciò che concerne i video e per tutto quanto esposto sopra la DJI Action 4 surclassa senza se e senza ma la concorrente, per cui valutate bene il vostro acquisto.
