I put a Canon 5d Mark IV on mine but I don't see why you couldn't install any DSLR on it. You are going to be limited to what kind of lens you can put with your camera. You can't go TOO large on it as it will just out weight the motors. But it seems to be handling what I have with ease.
As far as walking around with it I haven't had any issues. I think its funny watching some of the professional reviewers on here fighting with this device as I'm a complete noob and figured it out. Not trying to toot my horn or anything, just seems funny to me. Anyway, I think you will like it. I sucked at using a glidecam and could never quite get smooth footage with it. With this gimbal I got nice footage day 1. Have fun!
Now at first, I thought I needed 5-axis if I'm running and what not but if you tilt it forward slightly it does pretty much eliminate (not perfect) the up & down motion of walking.
<<Setup & Install>>
I will say the setup at first seemed overwhelming as the instruction is somewhat useless. But watching videos online it made me feel better I wasn't doing it wrong but did play around with it and made sense how the stabilizer worked. So it took me about an hour to really grasp the concept of how this gimbal worked but after that it was a breeze.
The app works really well too even though the app itself also had a bit of a learning curve but learning the basics the last week or so. Being able to calibrate and test to make sure the stabilizer is setup correctly is a nice feature. It is a pain having to calibrate the stabilizer every time you change the lens or the whole setup but for what I do it's a non-issue.
<<Overall Feel & Performance>>
The build is amazing including the metal tripod with all the grip surface with rubber texture finish. The battery is also phenomenal shooting for few hours only ate up 25% of the battery or less. I went through almost all the battery on my 6D MK ii during the same time.
It's not until you start shooting and then watching the footage what a world of difference stabilizing makes. I literally threw some clips for a surprise engagement proposal and I had people telling me they were crying. I mean I barely know Premiere and just did smooth pan & tilt but tried to go for the cinematic effect with songs that match the mood but didn't expect that kind of reaction.
And speaking of panning and tilting, it's BUTTER smooth. You can control how fast/slow including any dead zone but the way you can pan say left or right is so smooth with the joystick on the Ronin-S it's ridiculous DJI only is charging the $699. I have not used the 360 feature yet as I'm still learning but resetting the camera to be level with the trigger on the unit as well as tapping it for quick selfie for vlogging and whatnot makes this really fun to use. This can also be achieved remotely including controlling the camera's tilt/pan. If you wanted to, within the wireless range, you can control and shoot with the Ronin-S remotely!
I'm assuming due to the battery size and overall heavy duty build, it is NOT light at all. Granted, I shot with 6D MK ii (no grip) with Sigma 24mm f/1.4 Art lens, the setup alone felt pretty heavy to try and hold while tilting or panning. If you shoot all day I can see this becoming a problem. I'm not a huge guy but not skinny either. But I did find myself switching arms throughout the day.
At least the tripod bottom can be unscrewed which has standard 3/8" and 1/4" mount you can stick any monopod or whatever support you have to help with the load. I was able to use my monopod just fine for doing a not-so-tall jib shot and worked well. With the weight I feel like I need something that saltwater fisherman use with the pole holder around the waist and another way to have the pole supported with a strap of some sort (which I'm thinking of).
Also, supposedly this Ronin-S works with 6D MK ii using the optical cable but I've only had one very short success in starting the 6D MK ii from the Ronin-S handle. Not sure if there's something I'm doing wrong or is the setup but no matter what I do, it would not communicate with each other. I looked for a while searching online but if I figured it our or you know the solution please let me know. If this works it would be so much better than having to push the start/stop button on the camera itself.
And to add, for external microphone like the Zoom H1 (or the new H1N), while it can be added no problem with the hotshoe adapter, it won't allow you to freely spin the DSLR setup going from regular position and moving it closer to the ground with the gimbal locked as the height gets in the way. I'm sure you can work around this with another device or position them in a way that it's tucked in.
Even with the weight as is, I absolutely love it. It really changed the way I do photography and also having that background really helped to make some of the shots easily doable even with the unit low to the ground. Yes, walking and shooting is still a challenge especially for following and trying to focus but I'm new at this gig so with time I hope to better my skills and take more creative shots. It really gives that feeling of professional look. Even if it's sitting on the tripod, I don't have to worry about a small bump or vibration ruining the video either.
I'm hoping to get a dual grip for this unit. And also lighter lens and possibly in the future a different camera that can do 4K.
The Sigma 24mm f/1.4 Art is the sweet spot IMO for vlogging. Even a fast 20mm on full frame body would work really well for selfie type of recording also. The f/1.4 just gives the freedom of having the wide angle but able to melt the background even at f/1.8 so it's definitely a better choice than using 35mm f/1.4 as it seems a bit too close; that or my big head just does not help the situation.
As you can imagine, like most professionals, you need to invest quite a great deal into your equipment. The Ronin-S has effectively replaced my more expensive, bulkier, and less aesthetic rig, AND it does a better job.
The best part is the incredible weight capacity, and the fact I was able to put this together in 10 minutes and shoot straight out of box after watching only one set up video. The Only downside which becomes non existent with further product development - is the range of cameras capable of using the focus wheel.
I also never knew how much I wanted the tripod base until I used it and thought, "you know you can never go back after this..." Lol!
I haven't used it much but from what I see it's the most user friendly gimbal there is.
Top international reviews
