Build quality - I smiled as I unboxed this sleek, transformer-like folding controller. It feels like solid, yet lightweight plastic. Good plastic the thumb sticks are these metal jagged (but zero percent sharp) sticks, and move very smoothly. I like it! There's rubber where you slide your phone into, so it holds it nice and snug. The handles are adjustable so you get a good fit. My iPhone 6s Plus has this bulky rubber case and it fits up in there as well. If you have any thin case, don't even worry, it should fit!
Range - I used my phone for the first 6 weeks or so that I had my DJI Spark. I'm a tough guy for the most part, so I can make it work with my phone. Right?? Not really. I actually got scared to even fly my drone with my iPhone 6s Plus. With the Bluetooth off on my phone, I still lost signal a few times and I was flying within 98ft up and out. I've heard horror stories of people's drones flying away forever from losing signal, and I know there's a return home feature and all, but why risk it? I hooked this new controller up and binded (bound??) it to my Spark (google how to do this if you're having trouble. It's very simple to bind), and got going right away. I didn't fly extremely far away, but easily double the distance I had before and the signal stayed solid the whole time. I had my Bluetooth on, and it warned me that it was interfering with my signal, so I turned it off and it was flawless after that. I want to stress the fact that I am completely at ease with flying my drone higher and further away now, but I just did not trust my phone.
Performance - This controller and my Spark make for one responsive combo! If you're used to a phone controller, this is such a luxurious upgrade. There's no more need to toggle back and forth from video and camera modes, just press the corresponding shoulder buttons. There's also a dial that moves the camera up or down. It's just so much more sleek than using your phone. Much more intuitive and natural feeling. Most of the buttons on the controller are self explanatory as they match with the buttons in the DJI Go app, including the return home button. But there's one magical switch right in the middle of the controller that the phone app just doesn't have: Sport Mode! Holy cow. The slow little drone I'm used to carefully flying around just went by at warp speed! Maybe not warp speed, but wow!! It's a whole other animal now. The downside to this however, don't expect steady video footage when going full speed. The entire body of the Spark lunges forward and back. Side to side. It takes a second for the gimbal to catch up. It's great for showing off and having a high speed blast, but not so much for getting consistent, steady video footage. The controller charges with the same cable as the Spark, but lasts way longer than a Spark battery.
All in all... is this a necessary component to the DJI Spark? Is it worth $150?? If you're going to fly short distances and use it for selfies and short distances, I don't think it's necessary. But if you want to go high, go far, and go fast, then yes, I strongly urge you to get this remote. Just for the peace of mind alone on the topic of signal range, is say it's worth the price. What's the point of having a drone if you're too afraid to use it because the signal cuts out on you? This eliminates that and introduces you to the true capabilities of the DJI Spark, and the way it was meant to perform.
