Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Gr 2–5—When a title claims to be, on the cover no less, "the book that explains everything," well, that's a tough bill to fill. As usual, DK delivers—OK, maybe it doesn't explain everything, but this is a graphically pleasing compendium of more than 250 topics, such as the arts, people, history, nature, technology, and the human body. Within these, major subcategories are covered, including those required by Common Core, and the extensive cross-referencing will have students eagerly turning pages. Obviously, no encyclopedia can do it all, but with a clear legend, enticing page spreads, and clever pullouts, this hefty volume contains thoroughly absorbing facts. Readers will learn that one-quarter of the human body is comprised of carbon and that things that fall into black holes are considered "spaghettified." VERDICT Whether students are interested in newts, wars, ear drums, or outer space, they'll appreciate this entertaining, colorful way to begin more thorough research.—Sharon Verbeten, Brown County Library, Green Bay, WI

1.0 out of 5 stars Selected facts tell appalling and shockingly distorted narrative.
By Mica on June 24, 2019
I enjoyed reading through this with my children until we flipped to the page about Native Americans. The book erroneously states that the Native American population was reduced to 400,000 as a result of disease. Now I get that the book isn’t going to talk about rape, torture, and murder. But to state that the Native American population decreased from 50 MILLION to 400 THOUSAND from diseases is FACTUALLY MISLEADING. If they had just bypassed the genocide of Native Americans, I would have been very frustrated but not surprised since most of the information is very surface. But if they are going to talk about why the population was reduced so dramatically, then they should find a way to be honest as opposed to sharing straight up misinformation by excluding other KEY facts. I can’t rely on this book to teach my children FACTS, which is why I bought it.

We know that there are conspiracy theorists who believe that no Native Americans were intentionally harmed during colonization. We know that people still question the holocaust. These are not political arguments up for debate, these are matters of history and we happen to have plenty of documentation to prove that both of these atrocities took place. I am not asking that the publishers share an opinion about the genocide of Native Americans. I am asking that they not reduce their near-erasure to disease alone. If the publishers don’t have the courage to share facts in a book designed to educate children, it calls into question information on every other subject in the book. I plan to return it.

Oh. The layout is fine and the book arrived in good condition.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent quality covering many topics
By Sarah on May 24, 2021
Got this for my curious and detail oriented 3.5 year old son but would easily make a great present for older kids too. Enough material to keep an older child interested too. The book is excellent quality, thick cover and individual pages are a good weight and feel. Illustrations are vibrant and not too overcrowded or overwhelming. Pages are themed. See pics. Very satisfied with this purchase.
