Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 4-6-Two-page entries illustrated with bright, full-color photographs introduce the world's oceans. Although the illustrations are sharp and clear, the text sometimes lacks depth, focus, and clarity as the author attempts to include something about almost everything connected to the subject. For example, in the "Waves and Weather" section, an El Ni?o and onshore and offshore breezes are not adequately explained. There are also serious omissions. Jacques Cousteau is never mentioned in "Diverse Divers," nor is Sylvia Earle included in the section on deep dives. Auguste Picard, significant contributor to the design of the deep-diving bathyscaphe, is omitted from "Ocean Explorers." So many visual images compete for attention on every page that the impact of the dramatic representations is lost. Browsing through these fully packed pages and dipping here and there into the text can be fun, but for entertainment, Joanna Cole's The Magic School Bus on the Ocean Floor (Scholastic, 1992) presents basic facts in an entertaining narrative. Other fine introductions include Martyn Bramwell's The Oceans (Watts, 1994) and Seymour Simon's Oceans (Morrow, 1990).

There are no bad volumes among the dozens in the "Eyewitness" Books, but in this case, the publishers have really gone out of their way to give us something special! There is a lot of neat stuff in this book, which is all about the oceans of planet earth, and the plant and animal life that calls the oceans home. Full of factoids and the kind of wonderful illustrations that compel you sit and stare for minutes, this book is pure and simple great fun!

I'm a teacher and I find the Eyewitness books highly educational. I like the way the concepts are presented in a form without backgrounds. This gives clear facts to the reader without over taxing the attention span. The books are highly informative, presenting difficult concepts in comprehendable chunks that stimulate interest. I have almost the whole collection for my own children and they LOVE them!

Gave this as a gift to my 8 year-old daughter and she loved it. We have several other eyewitness books and this one has become her second favorite after the Horse book. It is informational, easy to read and has lots of beautiful color pictures. Perfect for any child even those that do not read.

I bought this book for my cousin (8 years old), he loved it. It comes with a CD for the computer and he has printed off so many pictures.

My 6-year-old son loves all of the DK books. Though they are a little advance for his reading level, the rich layout of photos, illustrations and captions are enough to captivate him and to educate him on whatever topic the book covers. We own at least seven titles (most of the others are about wars, pirates or knights!) and we regularly check these books out from our public library. My husband and I really enjoy looking through them too as we have always been fans of the DK Eyewitness Travel Guides.

The DK Eyewitness books are good picture books, not so much information. The information presented is sort of scattered and even as an overview is a bit muddled. That being said, it is visually interesting and my son loves it (and his other DK books) Be aware that the cd included just has some very simple clip art that can be found free on the internet, so it really is just a gimmick "bonus feature".

The entire collection is fantastic (not only this book, but any within the collection). I gave 5 books to my boys for Christmas and keep getting more until I finish the collection. DK books are particularly good for kids because of the ridiculous number of drawings, graphics, and photographs. Worth every penny.

This was a fifth birthday present for a little boy obessed with fish and other marine life. At this point it functions as a picture and read-to-me book, but soon and clear through his elementary years he will be able to read and study the text himself. Love the included clip art CD.
