Hey, Eyewitness! If you read this, please give us Kindle versions. Makes it much easier to travel with your guides. That way we don't have to lug around these heavy (1.5lb) books. Then I could also adjust the text size. (This is why this guide loses 1 star in my review)
Top reviews from other countries
The only possible drawbacks are that it is heavier than some guides and also some people complain that these books are focussed on mainstream tourist attractions rather than hidden gems but if you only have a few days in Rome then there are too many mainstream sights to see anyway
- Great pictures, as you'd expect
- Clean easy to follow layout
- Good practical information
- Usable map at the back (with no imaginary metro stations - see the really annoying Insight Flexi Map: Rome , which does include these)
- Good general tips
Less good
- It's bulky and heavy
Er - that's about it!
It's a good guide so long as you're not travelling ultra light and don't want something you can take with you on day trips. My ideal guide for a long weekend would be small enough to carry, and might leave out some of the detail for the less central and spectacular areas - but I haven't found that yet. But if I did, it would look at lot like this, but edited down a bit.
A good, thorough and usable guide. Recommended.
The addition of guided walks in each of the main areas of the city was also a nice touch and other interesting items were found en route and off the beaten track in some cases.
I also bought a pop up map but to be honest the maps in this book were better and bigger in scale. Its such a good quality book (much as you'd expect from the likes of DK) that its a little weighty but worth the buy anyway.
I had been to Rome more than once before albeit a long time ago but I didn't tour it so well until I had this little diamond with me.
A tip: before going, I downloaded the free TripAdvisor Rome app to my phone. I found it pretty useless for sights (so a guidebook is still essential), but great for restaurants.
