Top Customer Reviews
The sound quality is pretty decent- especially from such a small speaker. Keep in mind though that you are dealing with 2 full range drivers so you're not going to get the same dynamic range as separate low/mid range drivers and tweeters. Still though, it gets the job done and the sound stays pretty clean and clear, even when pushing the volume higher than you'd expect for a speaker this size. There's also a good size passive radiator in the rear that helps with bass without the need for large, tuned porting. For those that don't know what that is, it's basically a speaker with no electrical connections, magnet or voice coil that simply moves when the main drivers (the two small front facing speakers) cause a change in the internal air pressure when they move. So as the main speakers "thump", the passive radiator moves correspondingly.
It comes with a "Bass Pad" and if you crank it high enough and/or play a song with enough bass content at even a moderate level, you'll see why! It produces enough bass to overcome the friction caused by it's rubbery surfaces and relative light weight and will start slowly hopping along on the table with every bass note (especially if the speaker is lying on it's back- more about that below). Placing the speaker on the mat (which is a rubbery foam, kinda like a neoprene knee brace) helps keep the speaker in place (though play the bass loud enough and it may still hop along, even on the mat).
As with most all speakers (especially this size), placement is key when trying to get a good, well rounded sound and has the greatest effect on bass (since bass is essentially omnidirectional, or moves is all directions and mid/high frequencies are highly directional and generally come from the direction the speaker cones are facing). As a result, a small speaker like this is sending an already limited amount of bass in all directions, which makes it pretty weak compared to the mids and highs. To help with this, there are two things you can do- take advantage of "coupling" and/or "boundary effects". Coupling is when the speaker causes surfaces that are very close to or touching it to resonate at similar frequencies, thereby amplifying the sound (like how you feel the whole speaker vibrate when playing something with bass). Generally speaking, this effect works best on a solid surface that can vibrate easily enough, such as wood. As I mentioned above, placing the speaker face up (with the rear facing passive radiator facing down) seems to yield the highest amount of coupling, giving the bass even some "punch" at times. Doing so does reduce the highs a little though because they are now firing straight up, so listening off-axis tends to be less "crisp" than listening with the main drivers pointed directly at you. The other issue this presents is when using this speaker as a speakerphone since the mic is also in the rear. Granted, when talking on the phone, bass is probably the least of your concerns so standing it up makes sense anyways. As for boundary effects, this is achieved by placing the speaker against a wall or, more importantly, in a corner facing outward. Doing so causes the bass to both couple with the wall surfaces to a small degree (which will probably reverberate a little) and causes the bass to reflect off the surfaces, which end up nearly in-sync with the primary waves being produced by the main drivers outward in the forward direction (the reflected bass waves are those that went to the rear). The result is marked improvement in bass response that makes the speaker sound larger than it really is!
One of the little quirks with it (and it's kinda minor) is that the amplifier volume steps aren't the smoothest. Case in point, from mute to volume level 1 is fine for most situations, but in a very quiet environment it seems too loud. But that's not a typical use case for a speaker such as this, so I wouldn't worry about it. This quirk is also present in other points in the volume adjustment- moving from level 1 to 2 isn't much of a change, 2 to 3 seems fairly normal, 3 to 4 is a bigger leap, 4 to 5 sometimes goes down slightly and 5 to 6 is a big jump! This was with an iPhone 6+ and I didn't have a chance to test with a different device, so the issue may be specific to this pairing. Anyways, be aware that the amplifier stepping may not be as smooth as you may be used to, but it still get's the job done and we're not talking a $100+ speaker/amp here so it's perfectly forgivable.
Whew! That was a lot of sound theory there, but if you TL:DR the gist is that this speaker makes great sound if you take steps to enhance the bass response and still pretty good sound under normal use. For the price, it's a great buy and I wouldn't hesitate to purchase it again!
If you are someone like me that reads reviews and looks at rating and scrutinize every detail, this is the speaker for you. It looks cool, easy to use. Sounds amazing (10watt-vs standard 5) lasts for hours!
2 things!! Here's your drawbacks!! Not a waterproof/splash resistant item! Do I care? Nope. If I wanted one of those, I would have gotten one specifically for that. I wanted SOUND, LIFE, EASE, PRICE! (I'm a cheapskate) (looking stylish was a plus.) Dknight magic box 2 delivered. Now I have 2!! Here's the other issue...magic box 2 comes in black-only. So I had to put my initials on mine so we don't get them mixed up. There again. Do I care? End of the world? Nope.
So there are your cons-not waterproof/resistant n only in black. Whoopi dido.
Comes in size efficient box with bass pad, charger CORD (not a plug! Just the cord) and auxiliary cord. AND EASY TO READ AND UNDERSTAND INSTRUCTIONS IN ENGLISH!
I have no idea what a "high dollar " bluetooth speaker sounds like and don't care. I'm extremely satisfied with my magic box 2.
