Here's the bottom line. The softbox improved my photographs immensely. It was a great investment. I can afford this!

Having purchased a speedlight, I expected to be able to balance light in my photographs and that I would like the quality of my shots. But, the very hard light from the flash made my photographs stark with hard shadows. I didn't like it at all. It was like my photographs were 1950s crime novel photos. I wanted more soft light - especially for portraits.

I ordered the softbox thinking that I might use it to experiment with lighting, and at the cost I could afford to make a bad purchase and be disappointed. But, I had success on the first shot. I set it up. I took my first shot. It looked great. I'm very happy.

It should be noted that I already had wireless control of my speedlight, and that I have a good light meeter. Without wireless control of my flash, I'd have had to get a radio control for the flash or a really long cable. Without the meeter, I would have had to experiment with flash power and distance from the subject in order to get the right lighting balance. Keep that in mind when when you note that I said good shots straight away. The soft light makes for nice attractive shadows and cuts down on blown out patches of skin, or super shiny spots on the face. Nice! Also, I can take this outside and balance my light with a number sun and shade options.

About the product:
The light stand is lite weight, but sufficient. I oiled the moving parts and it works great. The soft box is made from a durable material. I'm not afraid that it will break or be damaged by travel. The box, itself, folds up like a car sunshade, although it's more difficult than a sunshade. The box flattens by pushing one corner into the opposite corner, then flattens by folding once again. That leaves a roughly triangular shape with rounded corners. Grabbing two opposite corners with your hands and twisting in opposite directions folds the softbox. It then fits in a vinyl zipper bag. The softbox has an inner baffle connected by elastic and hooks. Then, there is an outer baffle connected by hook and loop (Velcro). Both can be removed.

This is not the same quality that you'd get for $100 or $200. But, this doesn't cost $100 or $200 either!

If you've already got your flash off camera but don't have any light modifiers, I'd start here. With this, you can:
* push the light up above the subject to get a nice butterfly light
* use this for a great key light and use the sun for a hair (rim, backlight) effect.
* pull it off the stand and have an assistant hold it for more control
* set the stand up and to the side of your subject for a nice rembrant lighting effect
* set it to the side for a split light

Finally, I'm shooting the canon 7d with the canon x430 speedlight. Camera control of the flash is a built in function. If I had it to do again, I'd probably buy cheep flashes, get a cowboy control radio controller for each flash and put one of these for each flash. For the same money that I spent on the canon flash, I could have purchased three after market flashes, the radio control, and three of these softboxes.

May 15, 2013. I still love this thing. It's my favorite camera purchase. Using the sun for backlight and the softbox for a key light is my new favorite portrait setup. The one problem that I had was that the stand is tall and when the wind blows with any strength, it falls over. So... I put a weight from an old weight set on the stand when I'm shooting outside in the wind. A sandbag would work. Heck, even your camera bag would work, if it will fit in the frame of the stand. That steady's the stand and keeps it from tipping. Months later, no regrets. I wish I had two or three, but don't have the speedlights to put in them!

A few things not mentioned in the reviews:
#1- The stand can be a pain in the buttski to open and close( a tiny amount of oil (and I mean TINY)and problem
stops,just don't get it on your hands or other EQ.
#2 When using a receiver(I use Phottix Strato II)an apparent design flaw rears its ugly head!
The 1 inch wing nut that secures the slider is simply too long for receivers(don't know about other
receivers).
I took it all apart and swapped parts rearranged it and nothing worked!Sooo... don't do that!
SOLUTION:Go to A.C.E Hardware or whatever and get same screw thread BUT half inch shorter !!!
Problem solved! I agree with the positive reviews stated about the Item listed before me.

Good Value at this price

This is my first product review. I've been shopping at Amazon for about 8 years, but this felt like a good time to leave some feedback. For $45-$50 this is a really nice 20" soft-box setup. Something from Wescott with a similar size would cost a little more than twice this price. To be honest I expected to receive something almost unusable but was pleasantly surprised when I put this thing together.

In the package, which is packed really well inside double boxes by the way, you get the 7ft light stand, a small zippered pouch with the folded soft box and mounting bracket, and a plastic bag with the white diffusion panel.

The light stand is average quality but plenty sturdy for a speed light. It's a little stiff to open coming out of the box but nothing to worry about. It also has little rubber pegs on the feet which helps keep it sturdy on solid floor indoors. I would get a couple of sandbags if you were planning on taking this unit outside however, as I'm sure the wind would take it down pretty easily.

The soft box itself is the type that folds together origami style. It kind of "pops" out into full size when you unfold it out of the package. The good news here is that you don't have to put in together with poles. It's similar to how a lot of big circular reflectors fold together. It was a little mis-shapen out of the box but was easily worked into a square with some tweaking. It's a silvery reflective material on the inside and it comes with a single, thin, white diffusion panel that is attached with velcro on the front.

The mounting bracket for the speed light is actually pretty well made. It is metal as far as I can tell and all of the knobs and twisty things work just fine. The cold shoe mount for the speed light had no problem locking down nice and tight.

Lastly I would say the major benefit of this unit is how lightweight it is. You could easily pack this up and take it anywhere with you. It would be extremely easy for an assistant to hold for you on a monopod as well.

So again, this is not a high end product, but it is a great value for the price. Light modifiers are simply tools to take our photos to the next level. I think one of the most fun aspects of strobist photography is finding cheap ways to make good looking light. Pair this item with a $50 speed light and a $20 radio trigger set, and for $120 you're on your way to a neat little off camera flash setup that will teach you a lot of new things.
