using the knife clamp. Was very straightforward.
I used a not very sharp kitchen knife and set it to a 25 degree
angle (covered in the instructions). It took more than 5 or 6 swipes,
more like 15 or 20, but using a coarse stone the knife became very sharp.
Using a fine and extra fine stone I produced an edge that shaves hair off
my arms in just a few minutes. The big advantage is that the guide arms
guarantee an even edge on both sides which is the trick to sharp edges.
If you use a stone much thicker than that shown in the instructions you have to
compensate for the difference.
If you are looking for a scary sharp edge, you can sharpen your knife at a
lower angle (10 or 15 degrees) and then use an even finer stone. After
which you should hone the edge on a piece of leather or kraft paper. I have
done so and you can really get a razor sharp edge.
The only reason that I downgraded it to 4 stars is that it is somewhat flimsy.
With care it will last a long time, but I can see that aggressive use will
eventually break the guide arms.
I'm giving it only three stars because the product description is a bit misleading. This guide really only works with a DMT Aligner system that includes the Aligner base and alignment rod. It really *won't* work as a blade angle guide by itself on a regular sharpening stone. If you don't have any sharpening gear at all, I suggest you look at the complete DMT Aligner system, which includes several diamond sharpening stones. I've used diamond stones to do many other sharpening tasks, even including sharpening my ski edges! Diamond stones are easy to use, stand up to lots of punishment, and in general are easier to use for amateur sharpeners.
Pathetic design. As you can see from the picture, the aligner has a nice large thumb-screw for tightening the clamp on the knife blade.
BUT, the thumbscrew gets in the way of the rod for small sharpening angles. This causes the stones to drag across the aligner and not touch the knife blade. I really like the material that the aligner is made from, it won't scratch blades.
Recently, I replaced the DMT aligner which came with my set with the GATCO aligner (about 12 dollars at Amazon) , and I couldn't be happier. DMT makes the best stones that I have used; but this item is poorly engineered in my opinion.
ALSO, in the picture, you can see a brass screw at the fulcrum, which screws into a brass nut on the other side. The nut on the other side pulls out and must be epoxied back into the black polymer holder.
One last point is that the aligner is designed to be used with a rod system OR on a bench-stone. GREAT idea, but poor results.
It's only fair to mention that I own SEVERAL DMT products and will continue to purchase them. This is the only DMT product I own that I would not rate as excellent. The DMT company is a class-act.
