I bought this sharpener after some extensive research on price and quality. It was weird getting used to a handheld sharpener after using a stone for so long but this really lived up to all the astounding reviews DMT sharpeners get.

The instructions with it say that 5 strokes on the DMT sharpener is like 20-30 on a conventional stone and that is no exaggeration. This makes precisely consistent angles very important so if your not used to sharpening (or just even if you are) an angle guide would be a good addition because it's easy to mess up a blade, especially with a sharpener that works as effectively as this one.

This has been one of the very few sharpening stones where everything they say is accurate. Including which grit to get. I've used the coarse on my yard tools mainly and once to get out a nick in a well used knife. Every other knife the fine is perfect to get them back to sharp. I cut a ton of boxes and it can dull quickly after a lot of breaking down cardboard. 5 strokes to each side when it starts to tear instead of cut and this keeps it brand new.

I order both this and the DMT Credit Card 3 pack of Coarse/Fine/Extra Fine. Wish I had just ordered this product! Very easy and intuitive to use. I got a keen edge on my Spyderco PM2 in CTS-204p with this Coarse/Fine Diafold. I then followed it up with the Extra Fine/Extra Extra Fine Diafold. Move over benchstones, these are way cheaper and way more convenient.

I'll be able to comfortably maintain my rotation of 3-4 EDC blades with the DMT Diafold sharpeners that I purchased. They fold up neatly, which will allow me to pack them up in my work bag/travel bag/etc easily when needed. Now, to be sure, these aren't meant to process the volume of knives you'd expect from a benchstone. But for what I need them for, it's certainly a more economical decision.

Best Hand-Sharpener I've Used

This is honestly the best hand-held sharpener I've ever used. It's got some of the best sharpening I've seen from one, and it's extremely convenient with a decent price.

I use and abuse my knives on a regular basis, and usually wind up sharpening both mine and my co-worker's knives. Having used Lansky pucks, various whetstones, Smith sharpeners and electric sharpeners, I can say that DMT is my favorite brand. The blue/red combo is great for anything like kitchen knives, pocket knives, and survival knives. I wouldn't suggest it for razors or larger tools like axes and hatchets. This works best for small to medium-size knives that get used frequently. Mine are able to cut straight through paper when I'm done with them.

For anyone new to sharpening, use the blue (coarse) side until all the dull spots are gone from the edge. Afterwards, use the red (fine) side to give your knife a much sharper edge than the coarse side can give.

This was one of my Mom's favorite sayings, but I'm sure she wasn't the first. Robinson Crusoe was happy to find a box of hatchets on the wreck of his ship, but he was really excited when he found a grindstone. My Mom used a flat rock from a river.

They both would've loved this sharpener. The surface is a thin perforated metal sheet impregnated with diamond particles laid over an engineered resin block. DMT invented this system almost 40 years ago. i used a full set of their 3" x 8" bench size diamond whetstones in all my shops to sharpen planes, chisels, and jointer and shaper blades. The same set for 35 years. It's still in my Can't Throw Away plastic milk crate.

I've kept this folding sharpener in my kitchen for 15 years. No oil. No maintenance. Wash with water and every so often, a little Ajax or Comet to clear away the filings. It stays flat and doesn't dish out like oilstones, so it's great even for large chef's knives.

I love this little sharpener. I've been carrying it daily for about 5 months. I always have my two most used DMT benchstones in a pocket. It is perfect for a touch-up or to correct minor knicks and rolled edges on my pocket knife. My co-workers appreciate it too. I do wish DMT would redesign the handle so that it doesn't scrape the sharpening surface. I haven't had any issues minus a few very small "bald spots" which don't affect performance. Perhaps have it fit loosely and design a simple locking mechanism like what many balisong knives use. Just my 2¢.

I'm just getting into knife sharpening and wanted something I could take anywhere. So far it works well for my RAT 1 and Tenacious and despite being a bit shorter than I expected, I don't think a longer surface is too necessary. I was concerned at first but if i'm going to sharpen a larger blade at around 4" or more, I probably will have invested in a bench sander contraption or large diamond whetstone by then. I'm a little curious to see how the pivots hold up where the plastic handles attach to the stone, though. The sharpener I recieved seems to be a little rough on opening and closing. I mean, it's plastic, what are ya gonna do! Anyway this is great for portable or home use and definitely recommend it. Next time I go camping I'll be making sure to pack this in. The backside of the packaging also contains the coarseness of each color in case you forget!

I purchased the Diamond Sharpener to sharpen a small hatchet. I didn't see a selection courseness chart so I chose the double sided with course and fine. I used water per the instructions and with light to moderate pressure, within a few minutes I made little progress sharpening the Hatchet and the course side was done for. It became smoother than the fine side and no longer worked. If you decide to buy this sharpener for an axe or hatchet, start with either the extra extra course or extra course.
