Starting with the chairs strongest attribute, it's the faux leather material used. It's not just some cheap vinyl junk, it lives up to DXRacers hype of being a durable, sweat wicking material. You can sit in it for ages and not overheat or sweat and then stick to the chair. It really does repel moisture like they say. I like to sit in my chair shirtless (Put those tongues away gents, I'm a man) and it's great that I don't sweat and stick to the material like I have with any other chair I've owned. This was a big concern buying another “leather” chair, and DXRacer blew me away with the material living up to the hype.
The reclining feature is another solid point, you can lean way back if you want and feel very stable doing so. The caveat is that this feature is not overly practical unless you’re playing a game with a controller. You just won’t use it otherwise, as anything mouse and KB requires you to be seated upright. The reclining back also has a huge number of available positions so you can find just the right amount of seatback lean for you.
The arm rest height adjustment range is good, with a large number of settings so you can get an optimum height to your keyboard tray. I can lay my arms totally flat on the armrest straight onto my KB tray. Very comfortable!
Overall the chair also feels well-built and was quite easy to assemble. The construction, stitching, stability all feel solid. The base seems exceptionally strong. The F-Series chair fits me really well at 5’8” and would recommend you be within a 2” of that height for optimal fit. If you’re taller or a bit heftier, there are other chair models for you, though you could make do.
My first major black mark against this chair is the fact it has no tilt-lock. That is, you cannot recline the entire seat a bit and then lock it into place, giving you a permanent small seat tilt (It CAN be locked so that the seat back WILL NOT tilt/lean back). While it was my fault for not realizing it didn’t have this feature before purchase, a $300 chair not having it is inexcusable to me. Far cheaper chairs have the feature, and the fact DXRacer doesn’t just feels like cutting corners. The lack of this feature is made worse by the fact that to get the chair to tilt back requires quite a bit of effort and is extremely stiff even when the lean tensioner under the seat is at its loosest (I’m 5’8” 140).
Following on the above, I think part of the reason the chair lacks a tilt lock feature is the fairly cheap lift unit. I’ve now seen the EXACT lift unit on a 99$ chair my girlfriend bought. I double checked and was disappointed to find they appear to be exactly the same unit. Pointing again to corner cutting by DXRacer. The lift unit also offers rather limited height adjustment range in my opinion. Lowered to minimum height, and at 5’8”, I can just plant my feet flat on the floor comfortably. Anyone shorter, your feet will dangle slightly I guarantee. I’d say from there it can lift maybe 4-5”. I’ve been in much cheaper chairs that offer a greater range of height adjustment. The chair should be able to go lower in my opinion. Beware shorter persons.
The padding on the chair is also a bit inconsistent. While the seat cushion is comfortable and well padded, the areas of the head rest and shoulder rests are clearly just padding around the steel frame. They don’t feel thick or soft enough, and honestly, just feel kind of cheap to me. The head rest is just not comfortable or padded enough. The additional head pillow is kind of a mixed bag as well, and doesn’t really alleviate the problem. It is also rather stiff and in both available positions will leave either the back of your neck or head sore eventually. It’s useful in small doses, but is far too stiff for my liking.
While arm rest height adjustment is good, the arm rests themselves are nothing to write home about. They are adequately comfortable, and do seem like they’ll be durable, but for a $300 chair, they just seem kind cheap and ordinary. They’re not a huge con, but in praising their adjustability, I couldn’t give them a pass on overall feel and quality. They’re kind of in a middle ‘meh’ category.
A side note for buyers, if you keep an eye out, occasionally DXRacer will offer a 10-20% discount code you can use through their website. Keep an eye on their webpage, facebook page, and twitter. Especially during any gaming events or tournaments.
In conclusion, I do like this chair, but I feel that it has some noticeable shortcomings. I know people heap nothing but praise on it, but I wanted to spell out some of my perceived weaknesses. I wanted to be as detailed and forth coming as I could for other buyers, as I think this is a fairly big purchase dollar wise.
For myself, I would have gone with Maxnomic instead, as the tilt-lock feature was a deal breaker for me and would have kept me away from this chair. At the same time though I do not regret my purchase. This is a good chair, just with room for improvement. A few tweaks and it might be unbeatable.
From the packaging through the quality and build of these items --- and not to mention the engineering that goes into these chairs... this is, hands-down, the best desk chair I have EVER sat on for extended periods of time!
- The gas shock is very reliable - tight and not squishy, yet not harsh (think Koni Yellow shocks as opposed to OEM or full race coilovers... if this even means anything to you :) )
- The seat fabric is premium, even though it's not real leather. After over 2 months of use, I still don't see a single crease on either the seat base or back rest surface!
- The pillow neck and lumbar supports are soft and comfortable, but not too intrusive if you're a stickler for posture.
- Best of all, when it's time to slack off, the reclining feature is fantastic! And the stability of the seat in such a prone position, supported by the solid base and casters, isn't in the least bit worrying. I myself don't feel any risk of tipping over even if I were one to rock back and forth.
For the price, it's a bargain. For the comfort, stability, and posture, it's fantastic. For bragging rights --- hey, it's a DXRacer!
The one downside i have had is my hydraulic unit went out about 14 months in use, but i contacted the company. they put me in contact with the right person and they replaced it for FREE.
I will say that again, after over a year of purchase, i contacted them to buy a replacement part, and they replaced it for FREE and shipped it to my house for FREE!
Twice the seller has helped me with a problem. I highly recommend if you sit for a long time, to follow there buying guide on the website and buy one of these chairs. They are not just a over hyped over expense brand.
