The characters and the dialogue are the book's strongest points - in most places in the book it is almost 100% dialogue, and unless the author is really, really good using this technique to advance the plot it's easy to get lost. Webb does a great job of keeping the characters and story straight during these extended dialogue sessions. It's a convoluted plot, with a charming cast of police and mob characters, so Webb gets a lot of credit for making it easy for the reader to keep everything straight!
I've never been to Chicago, where most of the book is based, so I can't speak to the genuineness of the setting, but I did get a good feel for the city. The book, however, is really about the complexity of the main character's past, his friend who tries to help him out of his "jam" and a lost love who reappears in his life at exactly the WRONG moment.
Really great read for all mystery and detective/police procedural fans!
