Review

When the CIA and the FBI won't help; when Homeland Security can't protect you; when you feel that justice will never be served, there is only one place left to turn: the World Justice Agency. Under the guidance of the mysterious Solomon, the agents of the WJA mete out justice in a way that only they can. Somewhere between Stephen King's Johnny Smith and Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan, there is one man whose organization will stand up for what is right -- stand up for justice, and his most powerful agent is about to be unleashed upon the world's most insidious villains. In his first novel, Sweet Dreams, freshman author Aaron Patterson introduces the world to Mark Appleton, the WJA's newest, most unsuspecting agent, with a very unexpected ability. But then unexpected ability is what the WJA is all about. Unexpected ability and defending the vicitmized. Patterson's Appleton never ceases to amaze the reader as every turn of the page presents a new twist. Through the first two-thirds of Sweet Dreams, we follow Mark Appleton on his quest for justice in the wake of a very personal crime. While Appleton seeks vengeance, we also meet Kirk Weston and his trusty sidekick, Geoff Martin -- three men who take the reader on a high-speed journey of suspense and intrigue. I don't want to spoil this incredible first work by revealing too much of the story. Author Patterson weaves a tale that is at the same time both unrealistic and completely believable. His characters will win your support and encouragement while they each ride their own runaway train down different tracks to the same destination. And just when you start to question your loyalties, the story takes a shocking turn that sends the reader on a collision course with the possibility of a frightening reality cut fresh from tomorrow's headlines. New authors come and go every day. Very few come on the scene with the ability to weave a tale that will make you sad to reach the end, longing for more. At at time when the world needs a real hero, Patterson delivers with the WJA's Mark Appleton -- an unlikely hero for the 21st century. Patterson shows promise. Patterson shows talent. Patterson shows the world what justice was meant to be. --The Joe Show

I loved this book. I had downloaded his first book Dreams my accident. I thought that I was getting James Patterson and just started reading and loved the book. So when I finished the first book I went on to this the 2nd and it was just as good as the first. He is very much like James Patterson one of my favorite writers. I didn't want to put the book down, there was always something going on. The characters are great you feel you know them and like them. I would recommend this book to anyone that likes James Patterson or books like his. I can't wait for the next book to come out.

So poorly edited was this book (at least in the Kindle edition) that it almost distracted from the many ridiculous premises . On many occasions I had to re-read lines to make out the intended sense. You wouldn't know that I hate to be picky, but most other editors know when to use the word "than" instead of "then". The plot started out as a standard thriller, but ended up half-way through the book turning into more of a second rate science fiction than thriller. The prose varies from Harlequin romance sickly sweet (I touched her soft shoulder), to comic book heroic. Maybe I misunderstood the reviews. Is this a book for young readers?

This was an exciting book - I could hardly put it down. Some places could have used some more development, I was confused in some places and it took me a little time figuring out where we were in the story. Adding the details of how the storyline came about would have been useful and would have made the book a little longer to enjoy.

The only things lacking in this violent comic book are the illustrations & word bubbles. Total disregard for science. Stereotyped characters. Disjointed & sloppy anything-goes story line. Fantasy gadgets. Cruel & amoral acts carried out by the main character in the name of justice. This is not the stuff of even mediochre novels. This is a bad book. It is aimed at a person with a mental age of 10 or less with violent tendencies. I read it to the end in spite of my rising nausea because (1) I'd paid for it and (2) I kept hoping that somewhere near the end the author might come up with a surprise to pull it together and save his book from filing as literary trash; but no. I regret my decision to have finished it.

There is potential for a good story in this book, but it never quite feels cohesive. One of the key basic plot turns does not reveal or segue gracefully....it is fairly abrupt and this reader was left with the desire to re-read the section to see if I missed something the first time around. I wanted to put it down and stop reading, but I kept going hoping it would get better...instead it got more unbelievable. The author then moved into creating almost unrealistic tools the characters would use ...spoiler alert....travel machine? bullets that shoot material that make the blood harden instantly? Really? Not much depth to some of the main characters either. I did not finish this book.

To the author: remember, book reviews are only one person's opinion.

The positive: the author has the writing skills necessary to weave words into coherent sentences and paragraphs. Grammar and punctucation are good. He expertly conveys strong images. His writing shows promise.

The negative: the author has provided ample evidence of how NOT to write an enjoyable book. Characters are stereotypes; dialogue is dull. Chapters with tension are followed by boring back story "data dumps". The author is not well-versed in science, medicine, police procedures, interagency relationships, firearms, terrorism, global political reality or storyline credibility--all of which are important to this type of book. The substantial errors in the first five chapters eliminated my desire to read further.

It is my opinion, a typical adult reader of mystery/thrillers would not enjoy this book. Perhaps someone much, much younger but not an adult who has read well-crafted books. In my opinion, even if the book were "free", it would still not represent good value. It is one of the few books I could not force myself to read to completion.

Some of the time frames seemed very "off". The explosion, hospital stay, moving to a new residence....all in ONE day? Man kidnapped for a year, then picks up right where he left off and no one seems to notice he's been gone??? Also some of the grammar is wrong, for instance...."then", when "than" should be used.

Holy crap! Outstanding book, completely new and really thrilling plot. Allow yourself enough time when you start reading this, you won't want to stop! Please don't make the same mistake I made, this is the last book in a series of 3, now I have to work from the end to the beginning and I hate that....oh well, I expect to thoroughly enjoy those as much as I did this one! One minor problem resulting from being female, I prefer my heroes to be available, I don't like being reminded I'm stuck married to a jerk in comparison to how wonderful the hero is to HIS wife!! Minor detail, I'll get over it!
