I decided to make a power supply for using my laptop in the car. I needed 20V DC at about 3 amps. This product fit my needs exactly. I put it in a small plastic enclosure, added a cigaret lighter cord on one end, and the laptop plug on the other. There is once adjustment to set the voltage output.

Results: I tested this on a benchtop power supply before actually using it in the car. When I set the power supply to provide an input of 12v, I then set the converter to output 20V. Then I decided to ramp up the input voltage to see what happened. Excellent results. I ran the input from 12V all the way up to 18V and the output didn't budge from 20V. As long as the input is 1V less than the output, you are good to go. I decided to calibrate it for 12.0V because a car battery with the engine not running will provide about 12.5 - 12.8V (depending on the car and condition of the battery)... and 12V also allows me to use it with a portable/small sealed battery as well, and the battery voltage will drop as it is used. 12.0V is about as low as I'd want to take the battery voltage before recharging it.

Regarding heat and current. It took 12V @ 4.7A (56W) to produce 20V @ 2.4A (48W). That works out to about 85% efficiency, which is pretty much in line with the specs. When I up the input to 14.2V (car running), the input current drops a little, and the efficiency goes up. The general rule is that the closer the input voltage is to the output voltage, the efficiency get significantly higher (as much as up to 92% in my tests).

In my situation, I did not need active cooling. However, I did place the converter in a box with a lot of air holes located below and above the heat sinks on both sides. I also made sure the air holes were not blocked and the box was not enclosed or covered with anything (good airflow). Even under these conditions, the box barely got warm.

An amazing little device!

Really cool little converter here. I used this one to power two 100 watt LEDs. Keep in mind that if you are driving from 12 volts like I am, the maximum power you can get is about 192 watts. It says the maximum current is 16 amps on the input so 16*12=192 watts. Note that it will need some extra cooling, even if it is surprisingly efficient.

I haven't tested it for many hours, but it doesn't get as hot as I expected (even driving at the limit like I am). If you are using it like I am and your amp meter can't read above 10 amps, just read the output and add 15% (due to the efficiency losses) when you calculate wattage (since the output was ~33volts, the current was only about 5-6 amps). Then you can calculate the input power and thus input current.

I had a need to provide 24 VDC for a special battery charger. I had to do the charging from my vehicle's 12 Volt system.

This "Converter" does the job nicely.

I mounted the Converter in a die cast box and added a small cooling fan (just in case). I attached a Cigarette male connector to provide for the 12 volt "Input" connection. At the output side I attached the appropriate mating connector for feeding the 24 volts to my "special charger".

The input and output connections are via small screw terminal blocks which makes it easy to interface your wiring.

NOTE: There are solder terminals on the circuit board that are marked "FAN" (+ and -). I attached my fan wires to those solder points, but the fan didn't run---this may be because the "FAN" terminals are activated by some temperature controller??? I didn't want to take a chance; not knowing if the "FAN" terminals were temperature controlled or not, so I wired my "FAN" directly to the 12 volt screw block terminals, so that my "FAN" will run any time 12 volt power is applied.

This unit ships without any paperwork!

Be sure to print the "SPECS" page that is on-line with this product! It will give you the info you'll need for using this product, for converting an input voltage anywhere from 8 to 32Volts -- to an output voltage of anywhere from 9 to 46 Volts (and its associated Current Limits). Pay attention to these "LIMITS!!! Thsi is a good product!

I have a SteppIR antenna controller that wants 24 volts, and my entire ham station runs off of 12 volts so that it can survive a power outage. This device allowed me to easily and cheaply run the Steppir controller on 12 volts.

I had to put it in a box, and would have liked to have the option to purchase a pre-punched case for this card.

great little power supply

Im using this in an ammo can boombox to power my 24 volt smsl sa50 amp. Taking 12 volts from a small sealed scooter battery and shooting 24 volt to a dc plug with a pigtail I got from radioshack to the power the amp. Gets warm at high volumes but does great. Voltage ripples from 24.5 to 24.6 on my multimeter (i set the voltage at 24.5 for my amp) at 26 volts when the supply is firsr powered on the voltage can spike to OVER 30 volts for a split second. Setting the voltage to 24 sees spikes of about 28-29 volts on power up. Hope this helps anyone. The supply also has reverse polarity input protection. I did this on accident and blew the 15 amp fuse.
