Most digital zooms use electronic cropping to get closer to the subject, resulting in unsharp images. With Clear Image Zoom the powerful processor compares patterns found in adjacent pixels and creates new pixels to match selected patterns, resulting in more realistic, higher-quality images. Clear Image Zoom doubles optical zoom for closer photos. Optical SteadyShot image stabilizationOptical SteadyShot image stabilization reduces shake and blur by countering camera movements in both horizontal and vertical directions. Active 3-Way stabilization adds digital rolling control that counters clockwise and anti-clockwise rotation, resulting in more stable videos even at long focal lengths. The HX300 uses a second lens group shift which moves the lens group farther away from the sensor. This results in an expanded compensation area, allowing for easier framing. 20.4 Megapixel Back-illuminated ...

I photograph mostly wild life so I value a camera that has a lot of optical telephoto power. This camera has a super range in that department. I can go from 25 mm to 1200 mm in nothing flat by using the zoom lever by the shutter button. What is really nice is I can fine tune the zoom by using the zoom ring located around the lens barrel. The best wildlife pictures are many times taken in low light. I have an oriole picture taken at 3200 ISO that turned out totally acceptable. I have 2 very good DSLR's and a $1700+ lens for them. They have mostly been sittin in my safe since I got the HX300. That tell you how much I like this camera. I read a couple of reviews that made me wonder if I should buy this camera or not so I bought it from Amazon so I could be sure I could return it without trouble if I didn't like it. Return it! They would have to come and take it from me!!

Yes, I would recomend it to a friend.

Update 1, 11/2/2013: I had forgotten that this camera came bundled with several other goodies, and in fairness to those, I just wanted to mention that the 32 GB Sony SDHC card works well, the extra battery pack with the external charger comes in really handy (beats charging the battery in the camera ... Sony really should have included one in the box), the gadget bag is barely large enough to hold the camera and maybe a couple of memory cards (I bought a medium-sized Sony-branded bag separately), and the "flexible tripod" is useless (I threw it away), the DVD on digital photography is generic, not Sony-specific, so pulling up the online user's manual will be a lot more instructive. That reminds me, again Sony skimped here ... the included camera documentation is minimal and inadequate for familiarization with the camera. Also, Sony might have drilled a hole in the lens cap and put a string through it for attachment to the camera carrying strap or lens so it won't drop off and get lost ... I bought a non-Sony, tethered lens cap separately. These are my nits, none detract from the value of the camera itself.
I decided to buy this camera simply because I was looking for a competent, light-weight alternative to my Canon EOS DSLR, which generally involved lugging around a heavy gadget bag full of interchangeable lenses on my frequent globetrotter trips, and I wanted an extreme zoom lens for occasionally shooting birds, wildlife and other targets of opportunity at significant distances. Adding a Canon super-telephoto lens to my inventory would have further increased the weight to be carried, not to mention that it would hardly have been cost-effective considering the questionable amount of use I would have gotten out of it.

The zoom is amazing! Double what I can get out of my expensive SLR...But it has it's flaws. The camera has lots of extra functions and controls, but the instructions are pretty lame and almost non existent. The speed that it processes pictures is kind of slow, so you have to wait for it to process for a few seconds while it blocks the screen. So, not the best for action shots. Although it does work for a single staged photo... Say you are photoing a swing at a baseball game. You'll get the hit, but the play will be over before you can take any additional photos. The video works well. Very stable. And the zoom is active while filming. ( Its not on my other camera) So you can get some nice video. All in all its a very good "one stop" camera. I bought it to take on vacation so I dont have to lug around my big camera, all the lenses, AND a video camera. I think it is going to work out great.

Great camera. I went to South Africa and I took over 1900 photo and 2 hours of video and it worked flawlessly.
The panoramic setting worked great in the mountain areas, the back light setting worked great on the night safari where I took pictures of zebras, lions, and elephants.

This is my 4th Sony camera and it is a very good camera. It takes excellent still photos and the videos are very good also. Battery life is very good. Though carrying a spare battery is a good idea. The biggest thing I wish Sony would improve on this camera is to be able to turn of instant replay. My earlier Sony was able to but not this one. When taking pictures of wildlife (My primary use) the time between pictures is to long and the information that shows up on the screen is distracting.

I am a compulsive photographer, and started shooting people and objects when I was 15. A friend presented me with my first digital camera when I was 45, and life has never been the same again. That was Sony Mavica, and it used 3.5 inch floppy disks to store pictures. The highest resolution was only 1.2 mega pixels, but with its 16x optical magnification it did wonders for me.

This is my fourth digital Camera in 15 years. In fact the moment I read the specification and the Sony name, I sold my non Sonly Digital Single Lens Reflex (DSLR) camera, removable lens, and telephoto lens (puchased for a futune) at a loss and bought this model. Once again, life has never been the same again after I bought it.

Here are some of the features

*** It offer 20+ Mega-pixel resolution, something that can do wonders
*** It offer and unbelievable 50x OPTICAL magnification, again something that can do wonders

Care to Take:
*** The camera offers so much in terms of resolution and optical magnification that most users need to learn afresh that a powerful tool can be used in unbelievable way. Do explore all the possibilities
*** Do use a monopod or a tripod for shooting at magnifications greater than 20x

Uniqueness:
*** High resolution
*** Super-high magnification
*** Ability to keep the flash off in any and every situation (a manual switch is provided)
*** All other standard software features are available
*** Very light and ergonomic design

Recommendation:
*** If ease of use, high resolution, and high optical magnification is your need, then this is THE camera for you
*** It is very economically priced

I have been using this Camera now for 3 months and for me it is dream come true.
