Great for Connecting Raspberry Pi Console to a Mac

Great for Connecting Raspberry Pi Console to a Mac
I'm using this to connect my Mac to a Raspberry Pi which is a 3.3V device. The drivers are provided by SiLabs and seem to be updated regularly for new versions of OS X, Linux, and Windows. After downloading and installing the drivers from SiLabs.com things are (almost) ready to go.When connecting this dongle, be sure to connect TxD to RxD, and RxD to TxD (transmitter to receive and receive to transmit). Remember to connect GND on the dongle to GND on the Raspberry Pi or all the characters will be garbled. You should NOT connect the 5V and 3.3V power on the dongle to the Raspberry Pi.On the Mac, I launched the terminal app and within the terminal app, on the command Iine I typed "screen /dev/cu.SLAB_USBtoUART 115200" (without the quotes, to connect to the Raspberry Pi.The console login prompt should now appear.

Worked great both when connected to my MacBook running Mojave and when connected to a Raspberry Pi (as a USB device). Have used it to connect to multiple wireless router console ports and it works flawlessly. Only complaint is that you can't fit it and another USB device if your USB ports are stacked on top of one another and spaced too closely as on the Pi.. I just used a USB extension to work around that.

beware, not as pictured

I am sure it will work fine, but since it is not as pictured, I will have to test and verify. The 3v3 header is not as shown in the pic

3v3 is not easily obtained without hacking the case. Installing your own headers/wire

Kinda defeated the purpose of getting what I thought was a unit ready to use.

This was about the simplest USB to TTL adapter I have tried! The first adapters I used were cheap knock-offs from China and used counterfeit chips. This model uses authentic chips and was immediately recognized by both of my Windows 10 pc's. I had this running in about 5 minutes after opening the package! The device came as advertised with a 6-pin cable, pin jumper and the device, already packaged in a clear plastic case. Fit and finish is excellent! I ordered 2 when purchasing because the cost was so low thinking I might mess one up, but no, these are robust little devices and now I have a spare! If you are looking for USB to TTL, this is a no-brainer!

I'm giving these three stars because they do work for many use cases, but will fail if your device is strict about state change thresholds. The TX line appears to be the only one that has the issue, but it's enough to make them mostly useless to me.

5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding Customer Service from Seller
Reviewed in Canada on August 18, 2020
I received my items well packaged and proceed to debut my boot logs from my Odroids C4, N2 and N2Plus. Unfortunately, the USB to UART adapters gave me issues from the start. It got disconnected easily, one of them didn't work at first. I tested them with my Lenovo Yoga Pro Gen3 laptop(Win10), my MBP 2017(Mac OS Catalina) and my Rpi4 4Gb rev. 1.1(Raspbian 32 bit). I didn't get full logs. In fact, I barely got nothing useful. Got the wrong data(183 characters only). Nothing from the kernel or boot session. I was going to return them when I decided to contact the seller. Seller asked for a bit of patience and 48 hours later told me was going to send me a replacement. I suggested him to send me this product instead:
DSD TECH USB to TTL Serial adapter with FTDI FT232RL Chip instead of an adapter with CP2102 chip.
I received my item in 3 days and I made a huge difference. This time got the right kernel and boot logs thru Putty and Minicom. Highly satisfied with it. Just make sure to set the jumper to 3.3V before you plug it or you can fry your UART port or GPIO connectors if you use 5V instead. If you have a XU4, be careful because it requires 1.8V so this USB-to-UART won't work.
It did work great with my Raspberry pi 4's and NanoPiM4V2 as well.
If you are using Odroids to communicate thru UART port, I'd recommend to use an official USB-to-UART from Hardkernel. If not, and you're going to connect thru GPIO ports, this will do the trick.

Items worked fine on my Apple iMac running Catalina, with no driver required. There was no need to download any driver despite the instructions.

I was re-flashing a Sonoff POW R2 and this was made possible, and an easy process, using this USB/serial TTL gizmo. Obviously software to do the flashing was required; I used ESPtool, again it all worked fine.
