- Reviewed in the United States on December 8, 2017First off, the writing is excellent. Most well written how-to book I have read...maybe ever. On the subject of DSLR-filmmaking, it's great. Lots of information not just on method, but equipment too. He covers everything from budget pricing to...stuff I can't afford. I'm not a photographer or cinematographer, this book was for my son, but as I leafed through it I couldn't help reading it. I have information in my head now that I may never use, or that I don't fully understand, but it did help me figure out what to buy my son for equipment. He's taking his second film class, never complained about not having even a DSLR, so I was quite pleased with how informed I felt and confident that I got him the right equipment to start. The book is well written and covers tons of information. The index was well organized, the table of contents made sense, and the format of the book was a good progression and pace. There was very little I had to look up outside of the book. Definitely recommend.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 24, 2017I purchased this book for my spouse and she hasn't put it down. It has propelled her intermediate photography skills to a whole new level. The examples and straight forward approach to the DSLR film making process is top notch. Looking forward to creating film magic during the holidays.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 17, 2015When you think of how many DSLRs include a capability to shoot video, you might also think that there would be great demand for a book concentrating in this capability. From the title, you might also think that this would be the book to satisfy that demand.
The chapter headings might further that conclusion. After all, there are chapters on gear, lens use, sound and even editing. However this book is not aimed at the average DSLR owner who might want to occasionally film, say, a family gathering. Instead the book is aimed at digital filmmakers making everything from television advertisements to full length movies who might want to capitalize on the differences between most older digital video cameras and DSLRs. The differences include the larger sensor in digital cameras and the smaller depth of field achievable by DSLRs thanks to larger f/stops. There is enough difference between older video cameras and DSLRs to make it important for the video maker to understand how this will affect his images. The author presumes the reader knows about digital video cameras and only emphasizes the differences in techniques when using a DSLR. Because of this presumption there is little actual instruction on how to make a video, but plenty of advice on how to adapt one's practices. There is little about adapting DSLRs to particular genres, although there are two curious appendices on underwater photography and rigging a camera to a car.
As I read this, I remembered the saying that generals trained their troops to fight the last war. At this time the manufacturers of video cameras are changing their products to incorporate larger sensors and larger f/stops. In fact the point may already have been reached where the price of such a camera is similar to that of adding the necessary accessories to use a DSLR for sophisticated video making. Nevertheless there probably is still a large group of video makers who plan to give DSLR video a chance and this book will ease them into the technical side of that.
As a DSLR still photographer, I was reminded that video is essentially JPEG rather than RAW and that as a result a great deal of testing is necessary to make sure one selects the right settings to give the desired look to the image. I also was reminded that focusing was still problematic for DSLRs in video mode and that setting up and pulling focus are as difficult or even more difficult than with regular video cameras.
I was struck by the fact that the author did not find it useful to describe some of his subject in detail. For, example although dollies were discussed throughout the book, there were no illustrations of dollies.
I also found that many of the author's warnings were needlessly repeated several times, and that, as far as the relationship between the focal length of lenses and depth of field, the author failed to mention the function of image size and repeated this omission every time he mentioned the subject. Since depth of field is one of the main reasons for shooting DSLR video, I found this omission surprising.
If one understand that this book is aimed at the digital video maker who is new to DSLRs, this book can be a great help, even if a bit repetitious.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 14, 2015This book is a must for anyone thinking about shooting serious video on their DSLR. It is very detailed and covers all areas concerned, from purchasing equipment to testing your gear. If you are starting out and need a primer on DSLR filmmaking this is one book you will want on your shelf.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 25, 2016Great book, very detailed and filled with examples for low and high budget production. Would recommend to anyone else that wants to get their career started in dslr film making. Lots of examples and visuals to help you grasp concepts. Thanks. I really enjoyed it.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 24, 2016Lately I've been reading a few different books on filmmaking. I borrowed this one from the library. In my opinion this is a pretty good introduction to the basics. If you already have experience maybe this book is too elementary and you would be better to refer to more specialized texts in areas of interest.
One thing that I like about this text is that it does include some hands-on / step-by-step information. Even though I don't use the same brand of camera (Canon 5D Mark III) I still found the steps helpful and I could look to perform similar steps on my camera.
In conclusion this book does a good job of covering the issues beginning filmmaker's need to be aware of, but experienced DSLR filmmaker's might be better to consult more specialized sources for in depth information.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 30, 2016Good book for novices and advanced users. Bring a canon user the book was perfect for me but suitable for other brands as well. Well written
- Reviewed in the United States on May 22, 2018Fast delivery, good quality product. Helpful information. Thanks!

Jordi Prat PuigReviewed in Spain on February 17, 20165.0 out of 5 stars It is the must have
Extensive, long book with many many lessons.
The main thing is all the main problems you can have from the start of recording.
It's not a basic book, it is really helpful for people who have experience in recording and photography.
If you are thinking about buying it don't doubt. It's the main book I was always looking for.

This book is a bible, you can read from cover to cover and also use as a reference, slightly outdated but still highly recommended, it covers pretty much everything related to recording videos on your camera, it has DSLR in the title but everything is still applicable to mirrorless

fraReviewed in Italy on October 13, 20154.0 out of 5 stars Molto buono
