Mute will release M83’s DSVII on September 20, 2019. It will be available in limited edition pink galaxy color double vinyl, CD, and digital formats. Anthony Gonzalez (M83) spoke with his brother and creative partner Yann Gonzalez about the record, saying the below: At first there was this vivid memory of Dungeons and Dragons, this childhood sensation of living in an imaginary world set in a faraway past or a lost future. I wanted to create some music that could be part of this adventure and journey with all of its solitary knights, dreamy landscapes, strange animals, forgotten myths and old spells. Originally, the Digital Shades project was supposed to be much more intimate – a collection of B-sides and unused tracks destined for the hardcore fan base. Digital Shades was the name chosen to dissociate it from a proper studio album, although it would be fully part of M83’s discography. Digital Shades became an excuse to give a second life to some tracks instead of letting them disappear into the void. I wanted to create a production of ambient music that could evolve throughout the years. With Vol. 2, I wanted to come back with something stronger that featured the depth of a proper studio album without the pressure of providing pop music – faraway from Hurry Up, We’re Dreaming and Junk. The inspiration behind this record is mainly video game music. It felt so refreshing to play all of these old school games again. I wanted to be surrounded by nature and the past. I would only feed myself with older art. It’s almost as if I couldn’t stand living in the present. This is probably why it was important for me to only use analog equipment for this record. We recorded everything with vintage equipment in my studio and at Justin Meldal-Johnsen’s studio in Glendale, California during final production.

Brilliant. As if Vangelis made a score to the best imaginary RPG game ever made. Really comes alive with repeated listening. So many little details to pick up each time. I really hope M83 makes more of these. If not, definitely glad he made this one. Only track that doesn't fit in quite as well with the others is 'Colonies'. 'Taifun Glory' is a highlight.

Emotional Album

This album is not M83 like you know it in Midnight City. It's not an attempt at recovery from Junk (if you consider that a failure, which I don't either), nor is it meant to be. To me, this album is purely emotional for the artists involved and is seemingly meant to tap into some form of nostalgia from their perspective. It is based-on several video game compositions, which are referenced on their website. From what I feel, the concept seems to be an ode to childhood and adolescence as a whole. If you came to this album looking for the next hit single, you will be disappointed. Although, if you came for another experience from M83, and take the time to decipher the emotion that went into each track, then this album can be something completely different for you.

Fantastic Chill Soundscape of Fantasy

I’m sorry TarrMan didn’t understand this album. First off M83 is one guy, Anthony Gonzalez. It’s not a ‘band’. He has other musicians with him when he plays live but he writes all the music. So there are no ‘members’. Second. This is a side project, it’s not supposed to be part of his pop music cannon. This is a soundtrack to 80s video games mixed with sci-fi and fantasy movies of that time period. It’s masterful and beautiful. Maybe he should give it a few more spins. I love it.

Yall suck. you all absolutely suck. this album was supposed to be different. yall are used to “midnight city” and “wait” that you dont enjoy real art. Overall the look and sound of the album was great! just wished whoever handled my package wouldnt break my vinyl before i get to enjoy it!

The soundtrack to your childhood.

Like most of M83s work, this album had to grow on me. At first listen I felt disappointed. But with with each subsequent playrhrough I found myself understanding it more and more. Now I feel like he reached into my brain and pulled my memories of childhood out and made an album from them. Sad, wistful, hopeful, adventurous...he hits all of those notes and more. M83 is a special artist and I respect his work greatly and can't wait till the next album comes out.

If you don’t get it this album, don’t knock it. You probably just know his radio songs.
