Range Test: I picked up four of these radios with the stock stubby antenna. I placed one radio in the interior of my house, another on my back porch, and another in my basement and went to the middle school in town. All tests were with the radio still inside my car while moving without putting the antenna outside of the car. I lost range to the basement radio at 0.5 Miles, the interior radio at 1 mile and could still communicate and text the radio on the back porch at 1.5 miles. If you look at the map that I posted 0.4 miles of the 1.5 miles were through a housing subdivision. I will rerun this test once the 7 inch whip antennas arrive and see if there is a difference. I have heard that wide open field range "hill to hill" is over 10-20 miles but that is not a very realistic test where I live. You need the programming cable to be able to utilize all of the features of the radio and in the scheme of things it is not much more money. It would appear that there is more room in the radio for a bigger battery. Come on Motorola. Then again it is a five year old design. You can program in text messages into the radio however there is room on this radio for a T9 number pad and that would be really cool to be able to send custom texts to other radios.Bluetooth would be a welcome addition for wireless headsets or being able to loop your cell phone to the radio when there is no cell service and communicate and text through the cell phone. (I think the FCC does not allow that on licence free radios with removable antennas, I could be wrong about that.)Voice quality is outstanding compared to a much smaller DLR (I have both types) and way better than any FRS radio due to it being digital instead of analog.Frequency hopping digital radios are hard but not impossible to scan, there is no commercially available scanner for these radios, you would have to build one. FCC will not allow civilians to communicate with outright AES256 bit encryption but this is really close. Over the course of 6 cruises I have never heard once another person on my channel. With the programming cable you can make private groups on the channel you are using and they will only make calls to the radios that you programmed in, they have kind of a phone number associated with them from the factory. I always get full coverage on all decks from side to side, top to bottom, front to back, even the longest diagonal of a ship still has perfect coverage.**Update** I received the Motorola Whip antennas and it seems like the extra antenna length adds about 25-30% more range to the radios. With the whip antenna I was getting almost 2 miles of range in town. Incase you were wondering the DLR1020 has about 0.5-0.8 mile of range in the same area.
