If you are a pubescent boy (or at the same maturity level as one), you'll absolutely adore these films. If you're not, don't waste your time.

VHS2 continues the found footage sub genre of horror movies and does it remarkably well. I will spare the reader a detailed description of the plot as I believe it is best left to be discovered; simply put, a couple go to a house and discover a collection of old tvs and VHS tapes which contain some pretty scary scenes. VHS2 is an anthology with the VHS tapes each telling a unique story that is wrapped around the original story of couple in the house. Each story is unique and doesn't really tie into the others in any recognizable way. The anthology style lends itself very well to horror as there's not enough time to develop characters or background stories; you just meet the characters and watch as their worlds go increasingly out of control to a fateful end.
One thing VHS2 does very well is deal with the lingering problem of camera work. Most horror films run into the problem of the logic of the characters. Why would that girl go into the dark house that's making all those creepy noises? When Bob wakes up in the middle of the night, why doesn't he turn on all the lights before investigating that weird sound in the cellar? And the worst one for found footage movies--why doesn't the cameraman just drop that stupid camera and run? Paranormal Activity 2 tried to solve the problem in part by using the idea of security footage instead of hand held cameras. VHS2 actually places the cameras "on" the actors (I'll let you discover how) so that the characters can't drop or leave them. There's still the problem of all the shots being a little too perfectly composed especially when the cameras are dropped, but that's a problem I can let go. And the other problem with the found footage style, one I've never really had, is that for many viewers the bouncing camera is the same as putting someone who's prone to seasickness on a small boat in the middle of a storm; it's just hard to watch.
Getting past all the issues of found footage style, the thing is does do so effectively is put viewers right there with our poor characters. You feel as if you're in the same room with that zombie or trapped in the haunted house along with our heroine. You're no longer a passive viewer--you're actively in the scene--and what happens to our heroine or hero happens to you. One story in particular in VHS2 is interesting in how you see things from the monster's point of view instead of the "normal person's" which essentially turns the viewer into the monster. VHS2 consistently uses creative and fun ways to tell the story from a first person view and to really heighten the tension of being right alongside our heroes.
While VHS2 has many of the usual trappings of horror films (questionable character logic, overused stories, an abundance of blood and sex to name a few), there is a lot of creativity in it. It's found imaginative ways to use the somewhat exhausted format of found footage, given fresh life to some older stories, and used the anthology style well. The acting is good enough to be believable. The sound and music are well done. For those who are fans of the horror genre and specifically the sub genre of found footage horror, VHS2 proves to be one of the better films out there.
