The Dykem 80300 Steel Blue layout fluid is used to coat metal to provide a glare-free, uniform color so scribes appear clear and sharp. This product is a transparent, blue stain. It can also be used on other surfaces to reveal defects or pinholes, or view gear tooth contact pattern. It provides a thin film without cracking or chipping and dries in minutes for convenience. It comes in a bottle containing 4 oz. of fluid. The bottle has a brush in the lid that can be used to apply the solution.

Dykem manufactures marking systems including layout fluid, staining colors, thinner, remover, and mark and code pens. Established in 1920, Dykem was acquired in 1987 by Illinois Tool Works (ITW), now ITW Professional Brands. ITW Professional Brands is headquartered in Olathe, KS.

This dye covers clean metal very well. A good coating marks well and is easy to see. It stays on. The cap brush gets flooded with too much dye when you have a full bottle. I use a small flat horse hair brush about 1/2" wide to do the small or narrow pieces.

I have used Dykem for metal work many times. I don't think there is any alternative that works as well. If you want to make metal for cutting drilling or whatever. You just apply a thin coat dries in seconds and even faster if you blow on it. Very easily scribbed to mark your work and is very durable and wont wipe right off. When you are done with the coating, a little rubbing alchohol and its gone. A must for all metal workers.

Dykem layout fluid is a must-have if you are building any prototype out of metal. It is difficult to hold tolerances of .001" (one thousandth of an inch if you are not used to reading a caliper/micrometer), but using layout fluid and an optical center punch, I am able to maintain that tolerance all day. The liquid dries incredibly fast too. It has a strong odor while wet, but if you are doing metal work, you already know to have good ventilation. I switch back and forth between the pink and the blue depending on availability and lighting conditions, but the product never lets me down. I hope this helps you in your decision to buy the product. You will not be disappointed.

This layout fluid seems to do the job that I am used to doing with a sharpy felt marker. With the amount that I use a 4 ounce bottle should last me several years. The only thing that scares me is accidentally dropping the bottle with the lid off as I probably would be laying out the entire area for some time to come. But I'm careful.
