Top customer reviews
Pairing with the iPhone was just as effortless as pairing any other bluetooth device, and when you start the app you'll be prompted to connect; that's pretty easy. It auto-detected the roll of label tape I put in, so I was ready to print right away.
That's where the easy and effortless end, because every time you switch apps or lock your phone, even for half a second, the labelmaker gets disconnected. It won't automatically reconnect. To reconnect, you have to tap the top bar where it tells you it's not connected, select Reconnect, wait for the menu that pops up to populate with the labelmaker (anywhere from 1 to 30 seconds), select the labelmaker, wait for it to connect, and then press the back button to return to the app.
And then there's the app. Now, I created a lot of label formats in the app prior to buying the labelmaker, so I knew it could print the labels that I want. I knew the app crashes frequently, but not unacceptably frequently (on my iPhone 5S).
What I DIDN'T know is that when you try to modify a label format with the labelmaker connected, the app lags, taking up to five seconds to process screen taps. This doesn't happen when the labelmaker's not connected.
After a while, the app started refusing to connect to the labelmaker. It didn't display any errors. It just kept saying it wasn't connected. This persisted through force closing and reopening the app, restarting the labelmaker... Eventually I rebooted my entire iPhone, which cleared the problem up.
I tried to contact Dymo support. Maybe I just got them on a bad day, but it was pretty much a lost cause. Their chat support said no personnel were available and disconnected me even though it was within the posted chat support hours; the web email form told me that an error occurred and I should call them instead; calling them resulted in a long phone tree followed by an announcement of long wait times. Eventually I got the email form to submit and hung up on phone support.
As for the labels themselves - they look decent. Not laser-printer perfect. I've attached two images. One is of small text generated in the Dymo app, the other is of an image generated from a free iOS logo making app and printed using the Dymo app. Both were hand-cut.
The thing is, despite the issues, I'm tempted to keep the label maker. The fact that it can print 1" labels (the Brother one can only print 1/2" ) is a major factor, as is the fact that I can add downloaded B&W images to my labels. It's a lot more challenging to work with than I thought, and I'm a bit afraid that when something goes wrong, I may not be able to get any support from Dymo and it may become a very expensive paperweight. But it prints labels I wouldn't be ashamed to use on gifts, and it can fit a lot of information legibly into a small area. I do a lot of kitchen craft - making my own vanilla extract, canning, all sorts of things that need pretty custom labels. In the long run being able to generate nice looking labels one at a time without hunting down craft supplies, wrestling with handwriting, or fighting with printer label sheets would probably save me more stress than the technical issues cause.
PROBABLY. IT MIGHT BE CLOSE.
