At last! A deeply felt, deeply thoughtful book about men who caretake, wives who provide and kids making their way in a weird new world. Braff deftly knocks aside tired old stereotypes and introduces us to flawed and funny people doing their best to lead authentic lives. Writer does a great job of capturing his inner voice and those fleeting thoughts that help parents navigate through the drama of everyday family life. Sarcastic, yet honest and tender.
Book was a nice escape for me, and a good reminder that you need to re-calibrate from time to time to get back to what is most important.
I've read several of Joshua Braff's books & enjoyed most of them; the Daddy Diaries is no exception. It's a character study, detailing the life of a recently relocated family- the stay-at-home dad, the sweet, still enamored with her parents daughter, the sullen teenage boy, & the hard working wife (& of course, their friends, neighbors & family). Truthfully, it's a book for parents because it's inevitable that you'll recognize some part of yourself (or your children) in this story. I laughed out loud at some of the conversations between the teenage son and father because I have had many of those conversations!
Overall, while there's not a lot of action in The Daddy Diaries, there is a lot of heart and that's what made the story enjoyable for me.
Enjoyed the real look at strained friendships from long ago, and the strength of a loving partner, triumphing over the tumult.
It's a good beach or plane read. Light but deep. Buy it!
