Clark Thomas is the chief of security for his wolf pack that lives in Stoneybrook. About 20 years ago the town had an issue with corruption, but it was cleared out at great personal cost to Clark and the town. It has been fairly quiet since then, but lately they have had a group of outsiders allowed in by the counsel and they are starting to take over the jobs previously performed by locals. Everyone is looking to Clark to lead them in what to do, but he wants to make sure he keeps calm and has a strong plan with support from King Lobos, the leader of their pack. With the outsiders trying to get the counsel, king, and pack to return to their ancient customs, most which are barbaric and none that have a place in today's society. So far he has been instructed to stand down, so he is trying to act as the voice of reason even though some may be right and their king is too old, and just enjoy spending time with his daughter, Rachel while she is home.
She called him a few minutes ago to pick her and her college roommate, Carmen, up at the train station. He hasn't met Carmen yet, but she apparently doesn't have anywhere to spend the summer so she is staying with them. When he arrives he hears his daughter yelling to get away from her. He hurries toward her and sees three boys surrounding them.
After a little smart mouthing by the boys, he knocks them on their butts and tells the women, ah girls to get in the truck. When he got his first view of the roommate and her brilliant green eyes he felt an immediate attraction, even though it felt wrong due to their age difference. His daughter carried the conversation back to their house while he tried to keep his focus, but he was really impressed by how Carmen maintained her calm though all of that.
Carmen was in awe of Rachel's father. He took care of those boys giving them trouble. She thought he was very handsome and was attacted to him even though she knew he was off limits as he was her friend's dad. Later they fix dinner for Clark to thank him, but he was quiet and didn't finish his plate; just stuck it in the fridge. Later while talking with Rachel in her room, she confirms that she is still a virgin. This was after Rachel was asked out by Bobby, her on and off boyfriend for quite a few years, and she wants to set up Carmen with a guy so they can double date. As Carmen is leaving the room, she sees Mr. Thomas on the stair where she is not sure if he overheard what they discussed or not. Clark definitely overheard Carmen talking about being a virgin and it only increases his attaction and desire to be the one who teaches her, but he knows that he needs to forget it. She needs someone closer to her own age.
I don't want to accidentally provide any twists or spoilers so I am going to stop there. Yes the title tells you there is a virgin auction, but that is later in the story and I would give away almost everything to get to that point in the story.
I volunteered to leave a honest review for an ARC of this book.
When Carmen and Clark, Rachel's dad, meets the first time sparks flew, both were attracted to each other but knew that it couldn't happen. Clark was having trouble with his Clan and having to wrestle with The Outsiders that were trying to take over. This was making things difficult. Clark and Carmen gave in to their feelings but Clark had learned that Carmen was a virgin and he held back and didn't go all the way with her.
His feelings about the clan take over gets the best of him and he unloads on Carmen calling her a human.
Upset Carmen decides that she's going to leave and go home. She calls her mother telling her that she's going to come home but her mother doesn't want her to come home. Clark hears her talking with her mother and sees her upset and crying. Clark takes Carmen in his arms to comfort her and tells her she can stay with them as long as she wants. Later while she's out getting groceries she gets kidnapped by the ones that are trying to take over the clan and is held for a virgin auction. Must read the book to discover the outcome.
I read the book voluntarily as an ARC.
