Cheap, Raspberry Pi compatable DAC

No one will confuse this with a high priced USB DAC, but it works well. The sound is louder and much cleaner than the onboard DAC -- not fantastic, but very good.

I needed a better-than-onboard DAC with mic input for my Raspberry Pi, and this fits the bill nicely. ALSA drivers can drive it without hesitation, and it plays nicely with MPD.

ALSA does need to be tuned for latency and preference to use the DAC without filling your card with huge log files.

To the file "/etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf" add:

options snd-usb-audio nrpacks=1

and comment out:

options snd-usb-audio index=-2

Overall, it's not going to compete well against an audiophile's DAC, but it's well ahead on the price/performance curve.

Did not work with Raspberry Pi - ear bud heater

I purchased this after reading reviews that said it works with Raspberry Pi. Tried it with my Pi 3 and a fresh install of Raspbian Jessie. It was immediately recognized in lsusb and the gui sound tool. I could manipulate the controls for it and set it to default output, but I never could get any sound from it through my ear buds.

After a few minutes trying different settings, my ears felt unusually warm. I reached up and noticed the metal casings of my ear buds were hot to the touch. I turned everything off, tried again and got the same result. The device itself also got very warm. I really wanted this to work, but I'm not going to risk my earbuds and Pi 3 messing with it again.

The first time I unplugged this sound card from my computer, it fell apart in my hands. It was just the casing, so I put it back together and decided to simply be more careful when unplugging it in the future. It worked fine for a month, and then it started shorting out every time it was wiggled slightly. When it shorted out, I had to unplug the device and plug it back in, and then restart the programs I was using in order to hear and be heard. If I didn't do this, the microphone would emit a "squealing" or "morse-code-like" sound (according to people on the other end of my VOIP conversations). I ended up buying a whole new headset instead, and tossed this low-quality USB sound card where it belongs - in the trash.

I bought this as the workstation at work doesn't have a audio card. Plugged it into Windows 7 Pro machine. Was immediately recognized and drivers installed without issue.
Plugged headphones into it and then walked away to get a cup of coffee.
Came back within 5 minutes and headphones were very hot to the touch and had actually started melting..
This $5 item ruined a $200 set of headphones. Now I have to find and pay for replacement headphones because of this cheap item. I am glad I lost only a set of headphones and didn't burn my building down. DO NOT BUY.

The buttons don't work either...

I found a startech usb unit just like this one laying deep in a drawer covered in dust that I forgot about, plugged it in and it works perfectly.

This adapter switches the left & right stereo channels!

This is a nice adapter, and it generally works as advertised, except for one thing: it switches the left and right stereo channels!

If you're using this adapter with desktop computer speakers, you can just switch the positions of the left and right speakers to compensate; however, if you're using the adapter with two portable stereo speakers that are mounted in the same cabinet, that solution won't work. You could wire a special cable to switch the channels back to normal, but why should you have to?

Why is this a problem? Imagine watching a movie where two people on opposite sides of the screen are having a conversation. You'd hear the speech from the actor on the right coming from the speaker on the left, and vice versa. It would be very disconcerting!

I've tested a Syba USB audio adapter, and I can confirm that the Syba adapter handles the left and right channels correctly:

I would return the Daffodil adapter for a refund, but I missed the return window by a few days, so I guess I'm stuck with it. I wrote to Daffodil customer service when I posted this review, but I haven't heard anything from them yet.

Do Not Buy!!

I would not recommend this card. It is very cheap, and barely works. When I plugged it in everything seemed fine. Drivers installed seamlessly, but then I plugged my headset into it. At first, no sound came from my headphones. I figured it was sound setting issue, but after checking that it still didnt work. I fiddled with the cords and after turning the cable I found I had sound. This is not my headset, for I duplicated it with a pair of headphones. The card also produces quite a bit of static through the headphones too. Which to me, is very annoying.

As far as the mic jack goes, I had no success. All the card does was produce static when I tired to record. I even unplugged my mic and the program I used to record was still picking up static from the card.

I would not buy this card if I were you. Waste of money.

As expected. I use it on a raspberry pi for shairport, since I saw that everybody recommends an external usb card. Works without drivers on my RPi and on my MacBook Pro (it was one of the recommended cards on the RPi home page). In both of them the audio is clear enough. The card in itself is kind of bulky, you will need a usb extension if you want to use the other USB ports on the Pi (Model B 2). Volume and other buttons work.
