The story unfolds as each event is reflected upon and memories and lessons merge.
Very well written and in places quite graphic. Not for the faint of heart.
Shesha is not quite human. In fact she doesn't even care for humans, but for reasons of her own, she is also hunting; casting a strange golden light when she takes the heart of a Vampire...
It is not surprising that Valen and Shesha's paths cross; it's not exactly fireworks, as they both have the same goal, but it is interesting!
Valen's story is totally transparent. We see everything. His pain, his angst, his joy when even one innocent is saved, his confusion when he sees a golden light while hunting. At the beginning of the book Valen's life is shown like a series of snapshots, of hunts, a monotony, a way of life. Shesha on the other hand is shrouded in mystery and often cloaked in invisibility. We know of her, but not what motivates her. We know that when it comes to Valen, even she is unsure of her motivation.
...And just who is Adelinde, the woman that has stolen Valen's heart? Get the book and find the answers... But, only the ones that Caroline Gill is willing to share.
The way the author describes Valen, you can sense he is a man on a mission, but that it took its toll. He took every death and every failure to heart.
As this is a story about vampire hunters you can expect action from the moment you start reading. At the start of this book, I did feel sorry for Valen as he had no one to watch his back or to talk to when he was feeling really depressed. However, after he joined up with a partner his whole demure changed and he did start to feel more confident with himself and his actions.
Running through the story is the mysterious light source and whilst some fact about it come out, I hope more is explained in book 2.
This book is different to others that I have read about vampire hunters as this shows the loneliness of a vampire hunter. A good read full of vampire kills
We all read the books about vampires and their hunters but never before have you seen into the mind and heart of one such as Gill gives us here. You go into the deepest recesses of Valens mind, his world, his culture, and his life.
I will admit that at first it was a bit slow at grasping my attention, but that didn't last long at all. Diving deep into the mind of Valen was both intriguing and disturbing, to think this man has known nothing but the life of hunting "leeches" and his destiny is to know only that.
Gill has created a world that is believable with characters that seem so real and unquestionably true with every thought and emotion so well defined and described that you never second guess a word of the story. Very well written.
If you want a story with the supernatural that has more depth compared to real life...then this book is for you!
4.5 stars and my sincere thanks to the author for the review opportunity.
