This is a book about several people going through special ops training (Primarily starfighter). The author paints a very vivid picture of starfigher operations and training.
I particularly like the part about having to take a sentient life before joining special operations.
Thank you Mr Edwards!
The story is set in an alternate universe and time where there has been a major lengthy (200 years) war between the Confederation and the Galactic Federation.
There is a certain amount of universe building necessary, but is not intrusive to the telling of the story (although I may be biased as I want to know these things). Many characters are introduced in the first chapter as part of that universe building and are necessary for the background of Schan Vaughnt (commonly referred to by his nickname Blazer), and it is him this story is about. We get a glimpse of Blazer’s history as this coming of age story progresses. Along the way we meet numerous friends and would-be enemies as well as lots of interesting aliens, but I don’t want to say for fear of giving away any spoilers.
There is good character development and the science is sound. Edward’s flight and military experience really shines through in the book. You can see his passion for flying as well as get a glimpse of his experience in testing aircraft not to mention the attention to detail in some of the flight “scenes”.
I would advise anyone picking up this book to keep the bookmark for the appendix concerning times and distances handy as it can get a little confusing (although it might be just me). Other than that, On Dagger’s Wings is a good entertaining read and it goes fast. I look forward to the next installment.
In S.F. Edwards’ first book of the series, we are introduced to a futuristic world where aliens exist, long-distance space travel is possible, and the main character is still trying to get the girl. With problems that we still face today, the reader easily connects with the main character Blazer as he joins the UCSB Space Forces Academy, falls in with a girl by the name of Marda, and is trying to become an officer. I was able to understand the characters, follow their conflicts, and root for them all the way.
The world Edwards created reminds me of a mix between Star Trek and Titan A.E. It has a good amount of technology for the reader to not get overburden with the science, but be able to understand how this world works. For the most part, I was able to follow along, other than with the jargon as the explanation was in the beginning and on the kindle I have a hard time flipping back to check how it worked.
Along with technology, there was a good mix of a little paranormal fiction as there are orbs that are spirits, from what I could follow, that some people can see. It is seen as scientific and I really liked the idea behind it, especially with all the alien stuff that was already going on.
I give this book a 4.5/5 as it was a very enjoyable book with characters I could root for and a great made-up world, but there were some things that were hard to follow, such as the jargon, which point-of-view it had switched to in some cases, and there were some minor format and spelling errors. All in all, I highly recommended it to anyone who loves science fiction.
