What could be seen as a young disaster waiting to happen is much more.
She thrives on challenges. This modern world we live in is built around safety, manners, and that we do things a certain way, because,.. well, because.
But when the situation breaks down, when nasty people try to have their way, and even the elements conspire to destroy us, are we prepared? Hah! Now THAT is the question.
This is why Daisy is bored. Why she can't concentrate on school when there are so many things to do, neat places to go and adventures to be had. Maybe she needs to test herself to feel alive. She's cool and informed, defiant and assertive, even against a shark trying to have her for dinner...
Look out! And DON'T get on her bad side!
Very funny and often brutally honest story of survival against odds that many of us wouldn't take if we could choose.
The author has a knack for descriptions that avoid a lot of unnecessary words and get to the point, like a ninja poet, smiling invisibly. The conversations and Daisy's running monologue are sparkling with wit and truth.
Worth reading at least 4 or 5 times, or more. (Just think of what you could learn!)
Look out for Daisy, and don't try to take her Swiss-Army knife!
Daisy and the Pirates is escapism at its finest. Its pages exude a palpable sense of danger, you can taste the potential tragedy just around the corner. This keeps you turning the pages, yet the author sprinkles a generous amount of humor and wit to ensure that this sense of peril is never overbearing.
The story is told from the slanted point of view of a gifted yet still naive eleven-year old with a mouth and a rampant imagination. This is where J. T. Allen's writing is very successful, in the sense that Daisy Tannenbaum's voice is so believable you begin to wonder whether J.T. Allen might not be Daisy's pen name.
Daisy and the Pirates is perfect for the adventurous preteen who can live-out their fantasies of adventure and is nonetheless smart and whimsical enough to keep a more mature reader entertained. This novel gets my strong recommendation and I know I will definitely be keeping my eyes open for any of J.T. Allen's future publications.
The writing in this book will catch you off guard with both its humor and its tenderness, as the author touches the 11 year old in all of us.
