From the Manufacturer
Life-like, hand painted owl repels pesky birds and varmints while adding charm to any garden. The Great Horned Owl is one of Dalen's all-time best sellers and features a head that turns in the breeze like a real owl. For gardens, berry bushes, and grapevines: mount Owl on top of a tall pole and drive pole firmly into the ground (Owl must be positioned vertically for head to move properly). For rooftops and ledges: secure Owl by tying in place or weight heavily. Owl can be filled with sand or gravel for more stability (use enclosed stopper). Place Owl before fruit ripens and feeding habits develop. Place Owl in a prominent place so birds can see it. For added effectiveness, move Owl around garden every few days. Use ONLY when pests are being destructive, remove at other times. Store indoors when season is over to prevent pests from getting used to it. Visit www.DalenProducts.com for more product information.

The head on this owl spins 360 degrees, so I made a modification that limits the rotation to about 150 degrees so it always faces forward because the wind sometimes spun the head around backward. Also, there's a cap on the bottom (like a piggy bank) so you can fill it with sand or stone to weigh it down so it won't blow over.
One comment about packaging: this thing was thrown into a box that was 5 times the size of the owl with no packing whatsoever - just an open plastic bag. The head had popped off (presumably during shipping) and was bouncing around in the box, but luckily it's rugged enough that the owl was fine and the head popped back on. I really wish better attention and care would be taken when packing orders - it seems to be getting worse all the time. And there's simply no reason to put a product in such an over-sized box.
Warning!! The owl scares away birds (so far) but one of my two cats is in love with him. I can't keep him away. The dog is less trusting.
I finally was prompted to get around to ordering these replacement owls because it is now essentially early springtime on the East Coast of the US, and hawks have started to attack the hens, ducks and other poultry in my backyard (I live out in the mountains, so there are lots of hawks....), much worse than in past years. So, I bought two, then two more, then one more, and now I am up to five.
I love these owls so much I even have one sitting on the mantelpiece of my fireplace.
BTW, the hole in the bottom of the owl, which is shipped sealed by a temporary plastic plug, measures about 1.65 inches in diameter, and the owl may be placed upon a pipe or post of suitable diameter for mounting, or, alternatively, the hole may be used for filling the bottom third of the owl with dry sand or gravel, and then replacing the red plastic plug to keep it in place, and then the weight of the sand/gravel will keep the owl steady and stable when you place it on a flat surface.
BTW, these owls are very effective in scaring off hawks and eagles, even if I forget to move the owls from post to post once every few weeks, as is the recommended practice. It has been my experience that the owls do not scare or intimidate my chickens, ducks, or geese, nor most songbirds, nor the beautiful mourning doves that love to visit my poultry pen and eat some of the bird food! They do tend to scare off crows, but not as much as hawks and eagles are scared off.
