Weston (Wes), an arson investigator, is at the scene of a fire, determining if his suspicions are correct, when a firefighter, Tory, collapses. When he arrives at the hospital later to check on Tory, he can't help but hope he'll also see Julia, a woman that's intrigued him since first meeting her at a charity photo shoot for first responders and ER staff.
Julia, an ER doctor, was instantly attracted to Weston, and, after waiting months only for him not to make a move, decides to do it herself. Julia, due to a horrific childhood, has kept any personal entanglements in her life casual, except for the brother-of-her-heart, David. She instinctively knows, that won't be the case with Weston.
Wes has sworn off women after his most recent relationship ended badly. He's since realized she did him a favor by leaving, but has kept his distance from any type of personal life since. But, there's something about Julia that pulls him in.
As Weston and Julia begin seeing each other, it's obvious Julia is hiding secrets, but he's determined to be patient, letting her decide when to share it. However, that comes sooner than she'd planned as it's quickly apparent someone from her past has returned, and they're systematically destroying Julia's present piece by piece. She's already lost too much, more than anyone should have to endure, so she pushes Weston away, refusing to put him in danger.
Will Julia's past take away any hope of a future, permanently? Will Weston see through Julia's actions and fight for her, for them? Will Weston and Julia get their much deserved HEA?
One-click now and follow along as one woman rises from the ashes of her past and meets the man that will soar with her, helping her overcome it. On a purely personal note, I liked the numerous twists, and felt for Julia and all she survived, but her personality was just a bit too much in my opinion. Due to Wes's profession, it's safe to assume he's a fairly alpha type guy, yet it came off as Julia being more so, not fully allowing Wes to be himself...if that makes sense. Yes, I know she's had to be strong and was used to taking care of herself because of her past, but it was a little overdone to me. I did like that she could defend herself, and we were shown this fact, I just wish this ability was a little more balanced out.
**I voluntarily read and reviewed an Advanced Reader Copy of this book.**
Wow! What an intense read! Loved Julie the kick a$$ ER Doc who went through hell growing up. Wes the hot arson investigator (pun intended) who doesn't shy away from this strong woman. Great build up to their story.
Thank you Rachel Rivers for a wonderful and exciting read!
I was given an advanced reader copy of this book for my honest review.
While they are trying to get to know each other, someone from Julia's past is plotting his revenge in order to keep Julia from the happy life she is finally realizing that she's ready for. The more her past starts closing in on her, she starts to push Weston away. With a little encouragement from a friend, Weston makes up his mind that he won't let that happen and sets out to change Julia's mind.
I received an advanced reader's copy in exchange for an honest review.
