Damage: The Men of Law by Casey Clipper is book two of the series, it can be read as a standalone but I'd recommend reading the first book, Heist, as this one is a continuation and has the same characters in it.
First off, if I could give this book 20 stars I would because its that good plus you have the ending that you'll go "Wow I didn't see that coming" it's a wild ride at the finish line. I can't wait for the next book that will be out next year.
Detective Dean Rooney responds to a stabbing and is soon embroiled in the lives of Josie Conley and her family. He's still reeling from the death of his wife, Erin and unborn son, so the entire department is worried that he'll get involved too deeply, making it hard to come back. The department is under investigation from the jewel thief in the first book, so he knows that he'll have to tread carefully while trying to solve the crime. Little does he know that Josie Conley will soon find a way into his heart while he searches for the person who stabbed her. He asks for the help of his former partner, Jason and his wife Hannah as the department is short staffed right now. It will take everyone including Jason's former detective father while trying to convince a pregnant Hannah to not to take risks.
Josie Conley can't remember who stabbed her in her home but with the long road to recovery ahead of her, she'll try to help find her assailant. She has a successful salon and contracts with the Pennsylvania Film department plus an assistant who wants her to sell her half of the business. When Dean starts putting the information they have, she'll be in danger more than before. He'll move her into his house where they soon start to fall for each other. There are a lot of loose and surprising ends that will include Dean, Hannah, Jason, Josie and her family plus the ending that is just plain wow!
Josie is just full of surprises. Right from the start you get the sense she is stronger than she thinks she is. Even when her life is in danger she shows a strength you don't realise she has.
This story begins with suspense and attractions, which all romance readers know can make for an explosive combination. And boy does the chemistry combust when these two are in the same room.
Dean has a past that Josie has no idea about & Josie is an independent woman determined to never rely on a man for anything. This is a fascinating combination. At the root of it all though is instant attraction and a forever love in the making.
As the story progresses and facts come out you can see the change in these characters. As the story moves along so do they & the development is both subtle and astounding at the same time. It is more obvious in Dean due to his history and the nature of his job, but it is also relevant to their relationship. If his character didn't progress their relationship would have been a ships passing in the night type of relationship.
The mystery is built up at a steady pace from the very beginning but doesn't overtake the romance brewing alongside it.
I have to say, I narrowed the villain down to one of 3 characters but couldn't put my finger on which one of them it was, so I was a bit surprised when I learned exactly who it was!!
If you like fast paced suspense/romance then you are going to love this latest release from Casey Clipper. It is well worth getting your one click finger out for!
