My only quibble was in how the two came together, with Dare's behavior approaching stalker status in a way that really came across as unsettling for this reader. Otherwise, this is an uplifting tale and a most worthy addition to the Men of London series.
Jax has suffered a horrible trauma in his past, and has the physical scars as a reminder every time he looks in the mirror. An orphan, working hard to make his way in the world, he is an old soul at 18. He can't really believe anyone would be interested in a relationship with "damaged goods" and is not expecting anyone to see past the scars to the person beneath.
Dare is an gorgeous Irish traveller making his own way in the world and managing the local sweet shop. When wandering in the woods near his village he spies a "beautiful angel" in the garden and is mesmerised. Watching Jax interact with the children at his half way house, Dare falls a little in love with the sweet, caring, young man before him. Finding a non stalkerish way to meet Jax consumes his every waking hour.
When Jax runs into Dare at their local mall he can't believe the stunning, muscular young man could possibly be interested in him, and refuses an offer of coffee. How these two beautiful souls gradually come together and the touching development of their relationship, as they work through the issues from the past, makes for a heartwarming read. A frightening visitor from the past and Jax's insecurities place pressure on their burgeoning relationship but together they have a chance to achieve the HEA they so desperately crave and deserve.
Damaged Goods was an enchanting love story that had me riveted from the first to the last page. I read it in one sitting and finished with a completely satisfied smile on my face. A feel good, delightful read, and a very different, but perfect, addition to the series.
Yes there is heartbreak in this book, there is lust , sex, friendship, love, laughter, a surprise or two and forgiveness. But what else this story has is a lesson that you must not stereotype people. Look closely to who THEY are. Don't base it on any preconceived notions. I fell hard and fast for Dare and Jax as a couple, as a team, and I enjoyed seeing their story come to life in such a way that makes me root them on .
Susan did an amazing job bringing this story to life. Kept me turning page after page. Wanting, needing to find out how it all turned out.
I highly recommend this book. Whether you have read the previous books or not.
5 emotional stars!! So well written, you can’t help but fall in love with the story and characters!
Jax had a rough life growing up, he’s an orphan and left with a scarred face. Now eighteen, he’s ready to start a new life, but in the back of his mind, he’s always wondering who would ever fall for the man with the messed up face. That changes the minute he sees Dare. Dare fell hard for Jax the minute he sees him and knows that despite the scars, there’s more to Jax than anyone can see. Dare is convinced he needs to show Jax what he’s missing and that it’s possible to fall in love, no matter who you are.
This story was beautiful and emotional. I loved that the author shows us that love isn’t about what’s on the outside, it’s about the inside. The heart if you will. Jax’s story will break your heart, but Dare puts it back together for his unconditional love! Such a great book!!
