older one. I really like Joan Blondel, Ruby Keeler and Dick Powell and my old copy of Dames
would not play on old player. The copy of Dames that I purchased from Amazon played perfectly
with no problems. The picture was very clear and the audio was excellent.

Dick Powell and Ruby Keeler make a good couple swimming against a somewhat contrived plot of a crusading moralist trying to shout down shows which he considers to be immoral. The music in this show is lyrical (I Only Have Eyes for You) and Busby Berkeley's choreography is top notch. The musical vignettes are clever and entertaining. Watching Joan Blondell sing as a laundress was a real hoot. The lavish lifestyle of some people during the Depression is eye opening.

An old fashioned 1930's sentimental musical. Audio not crisp, which is indigenous to the movies in 1930. Dick Powell in fine voice and form. Several tunes to keep you humming all day long. Ruby Keeler in her heyday; an adequate dancer but a very cute presence. Not a great movie, but will keep viewers entertained listening to Dick Powell singing "I Only Have Eyes for You" and the Busby Burkeley staged choreography make it a nice movie to view. However, the line from Keeler about being "White, 21, and free" would never go over with today's political correctness, so it would probably have to be edited out or a substitute word dubbed in. Routine plot and adequate acting from supporting cast make this a movie easy on the nerves, but definitely very dated in every possible respect. I liked the music and the fact that when Dick Powell sang, one could understand all the words, unlike what is paased for music these days. One of the grand old musicals of the 1930s awaits your viewing. A breath of fresh air from long ago.

Just OK for a 1934 musical, but not really worth the time

Except for Dick Powell, the acting from the other actors was pretty flat. The story line was thin and some scenes were downright confusing and unbelievable. Like when they are supposed to be on stage performing Powell's new play and the scene shows them walking several blocks of the city (with cars driving by on the streets). Just seemed weird and detracted from the supposed reason everyone else is sitting in a theater watching the play. Also, I guess you can call it a musical (there are a couple decent songs) but you better LOVE two things: 1) The song "I only have eyes for you"....you'll hear it over and over and over and over again; 2) VERY long Busby Berkeley numbers … the girls even look bored at times during the routines! I guess all this explains why I had never heard of this musical before, it's pretty forgettable.
