Holy. H#ll. (Understatement of the year)
This book will rip you to shreds and make you bleed and want to make others bleed, numerous times, and then it will slowly start to stitch you back up with the help of a sweet, Hangmen style sweet (let’s not get sh$te twisted ~ this is a Tillie Cole dark romance now), romance and the Hangmen and their women.
GAH. Where to start? What to say? What not to say? So bl$%dy difficult, but it must get done.
I ended up adoring AK and Phebe. AK may be one of The Psycho Trio, but as we all know what’s on the surface doesn’t always match what is going on inside and AK has a lot going on inside and it made me bleed for him and yet admire him even more. Finding out about his past and seeing how it shaped him into one of the few people in the universe that has the ability to reign in Vike and Flame brought out all the feels. I bled for Phebe. Everything that she was put through by the Order and Meister was simply brutal. But to watch as she clawed her way out showed just how strong she was. Their journey is brutal on so many levels, but as they continued to collide all I could see was how perfect they were for each other. They tore each other apart and then helped each other heal and grow stronger than they ever were before.
And as for the rest of the Hangmen and their women that we’ve come to know and love ~ there is no skimping on all that goodness. Viking, Flame and even Lil Ash are front and center in this journey and if you didn’t love them before, you will now. Though Viking...that man...I just...when he finally gets a book we’re all in for a h/ll of a ride. We also get to hang out with a few of the other brothers that haven’t had too much page time and I seriously want more. And for those who want to know, Rider is in this one and I still have nothin’ but love the man.
I think I’ve said this in every review I’ve done for a Tillie Cole dark romance, the woman goes big. This is balls to the wall, no apologies given, in your face reading. There is no sugarcoating anything, not the dark and not the sweet ~ and, yes there is sweet mixed in. So if you have triggers then move right on past these books, though I will say you are missing out on one of the best dark romances out there. But if not, or you want to give it a go, then don’t start with this one. Go back to It Ain’t Me, Babe to get the full experience and for the love all that is holy do NOT skip Deep Redemption. Don’t do it. You’ll be sorry. It’s an amazing read and, as far as I’m concerned, must be read to truly understand all that goes on in this one. We get a few teases as to what will possibly be coming next for the Hangmen and I cannot wait to see where Ms. Cole will be taking us next!

With each book in this series, you think it cannot get any worse when you read what these poor girls go through. And then we get to Phebe. Poor Phebe. She definitely got the worst of it all, and she felt that's how she was paying for believing in a false cause which had destroyed her and her sisters' lives.
Then we have AK. Talk about a tortured soul. Definitely not as tortured as Flame's, who can even compete with that, but tortured none the less. Phebe becomes his salvation in a very dark world, helps him come to terms with the past and look towards their "sunrise" together. He helps her find her place in a world she does not know and where she needs to learn to forgive herself for her past life over which she had had no control.
We also get a glimpse into Flame's life, and especially into Flame's head. He broke my heart again. All I was thinking was "Maddiiiieeeee!!!!" Seeing Flame suffering for his best friend was just so amazing to witness, I felt like I was right there with him. I would have totally given him a hug had I not thought he'd stab me in the eyeball 👀
I cannot wait to read Styx and Mae's novella next. And the next full length novel in the series cannot come soon enough.
The Hades Hangmen series has been one of much controversy since the start. There is a lot going on in this series which can be viewed as immoral or just downright terrible. I can absolutely see where this view comes from, but these people are making this moral statement based on them living in their comfortable lives. Not many of us can understand what it’s like to be in a situation such as those characters have lived in these stories. So, for that, I try to simply understand the characters and in that I’ve come to thoroughly love this series.
AK is a man who has seen a lot. The way he lives his life is directly reflected from the atrocities he has seen and experienced. Although a tough, and seemingly unfeeling man, he has a lot of morals directed in the right way. Because of this, he ends up in direct line to oppose Meister and his followers. This leads him right back to Phebe, a woman who is often plaguing his thoughts.
Phebe has led her whole life in service to men. Never has she felt a breath of freedom, and so many moments she has had her choices taken from her. Daily, Phebe was plagued with so many regrets and worries from the many times men have taken control of her life.
This story gave me so many feels. AK and Phebe have commonalities that I was genuinely surprised to see. When they began talking about what they’d been through, how their lives affected others, and all of their regrets … I found myself bawling. My heart has not hurt this much for a long time while reading a story. So many secrets weave through the lives of these characters, that it’s hard to know where one ends and truth begins. At every turn I felt myself losing more and more of my heart to this story.
I don’t want to give anything away. There are some big secrets that truly make this story one that called to my heart. Hold true to the warnings, though. There are a lot of very dark, disturbing, and explicit subjects discussed throughout the book. But within this darkness, there is so much loyalty, love, and devotion. It proves that there truly can be beauty in pain.
