The most savagely subversive film by the great iconoclast Luchino Visconti portrays Nazism’s power to utterly corrupt

The most savagely subversive film by the iconoclastic auteur Luchino Visconti employs the mechanics of deliriously stylized melodrama to portray Nazism’s total corruption of the soul.

In the wake of Hitler’s ascent to power, the wealthy industrialist von Essenbeck family and their associates—including the scheming social climber Friedrich (Dirk Bogarde), the conniving matriarch Sophie (Ingrid Thulin), and the cruelly deviant heir Martin (Helmut Berger, memorably donning Dietrich-like drag in his breakthrough role)—descend into a self-destructive spiral of decadence, greed, perversion, and all-consuming hatred as they vie for power, over the family business and over one another.

The heightened performances and Visconti’s luridly expressionistic use of Technicolor conjure a garish world of decaying opulence in which one family’s downfall comes to stand for the moral rot of a nation.

Special Edition Features

  • New 2K digital restoration by the Cineteca di Bologna and Institut Lumière
  • Archival interviews with Visconti, actors Helmut Berger, Ingrid Thulin, and Charlotte Rampling
  • Behind-the-scenes documentary
  • New interview with scholar Stefano Albertini
Three scenes: a madman, a nazi party, two parents realizing the errors of the time and their roles

This blu ray Version of Visconti’s masterpiece has finally been restored, remastered and available on blu ray for the first time in the USA. It was the one release of 2021 that I was most excited about.
Criterion’s Special edition doesn’t disappoint. The reds and blues are much clearer. The extra features and articles are fantastic. Thank you Criterion. Hopefully another Visconti masterpiece “Ludwig” is down the line

Leaving a review because of the poverty of the irrelevance of the other reviews. This film is not an easy watch; it demands a lot from the viewer but oh is it a rewarding and fascinating watch. It is no wonder Fassbinder called it the greatest film ever made; even by Visconti's standards, the film is haunting and breathtaking. The subject matter is dark, the film reflects that in its luscious morbidity. This isn't about historical accuracy as mentioned in one of those regrettable reviews; this is a striking and unforgettable work of art. This is closer to an ancient Greek tragedy than it is a historical epic; it is about human depravity, about the decadence of narrative and form. Criterion did the film justice; the transfer is gorgeous and gets better with multiple viewings. It's a shame this film hasn't received the attention it deserves; the cast is spectacular, the color is gorgeous, captivating cinematography, the morbid depravity ravishing. Perhaps it is damned in that sense as well. Watch this beautiful masterwork at your own risk. Its Visconti's lusciously dark and colourful masterpiece and a hidden jewel in the Criterion Collection

If you are looking for a historically accurate movie look elsewhere. This movie reminded me of those really bad soap operas that used to come on TV at lunch time back in the late 90's-early 2000's-only this was much more vulgar and crude.

This film is hot garbage due to the terrible acting and the grossly historically inaccurate- boring storyline.

There are many other films in the collection to explore that accurately depict what life was like during the Second World War such as "Rosellini's War trilogy", Rosellini's "General de Rovelle" as well as the movies "Kapo", "The Bridge" and "Army of Shadows."

The video restoration is spectacular, the audio restoration of the English/German audio track probably the best that can be expected given the audio technology available at the time. Unfortunately, there's one defect in the disc mastering: the Italian audio track can't be selected. Given that that is going to have been a dub anyway, it's hardly critical, but deduct a star nonetheless.

I love Helmut Berger. He is the perfect man - extremely handsome and always willing to show his beautiful body. This film by Luciano Visconti is a masterpiece.

Glad to see this important film so impeccably restored. I was slightly apprehensive about ordering it as I hadn't at all liked the (creative?) restoration of 'Death in Venice,' but this one is first-class.
