The heroine, Wendy Dennison, unhappy with her success as a novelist, reeling from a failed marriage and suffering financial distress, mutters that pledge in the coffee shop where she writes. Predictably the words have no more left her lips when the mysterious Mr.B appears, promising her all the fame and fortunes she seeks. It's a familiar theme but with a twist: the dominance and surrender of a BDSM relationship. I am not a fan of BDSM and certainly not a practitioner, but Lisabet Sarai makes this world accessible to the uninitiated, revealing, most of all, that when all the toys and role playing are stripped away, at it's heart BDSM relationships are about trust and surrender. As usual with her work, there is plenty of sexual heat as well as graphic but tasteful sex and some dubious consent.
But there is the nagging question: would you sell your soul? Maybe you have already but didn't get anything for it.
I liked Wendy. She has to face herself and ask herself the hard questions--the easy way or take responsibility for her actions. Bub is all seven sins and more. When he is thwarted, he has his ways to bring Wendy to his thinking. The sex is hot but Wendy realizes it is not the total sum of what she wants. She puts Bub on notice but he thinks he can control her. Wendy's agent, Daniel, figures prominently in bringing Wendy back from the dark side. He is her source of strength. Wendy's choices may not be the wisest but Daniel is there to guide her when needed.
The story is interesting. Good vs. evil, easy or hard, stay or go. Wendy has to do a lot of soul searching to discover what she wants from life. Somehow, it was never what she thought she wanted. And when the fall comes nothing happens that Wendy expected. I think it turns out much better than what she wanted or expected.
I love Lisabet Sarai’s stories. They are so richly crafted, the characters so real. In this one, Wendy pores over the contract for her soul, negotiating like the pro every author needs to be. She drives a hard bargain, but in the process begins to lose herself and her autonomy. She does top the charts, however fame and fortune isn’t all it’s cracked up to be.
Damned if You Do is about more than just another Faustian bargain. The hope of every author is burned into the pages, the ambition, the fear and the unlikelihood of ever reaching the heights you’ve dreamed of. It’s also about counting the blessings you have already, appreciating them and enjoying them, rather than focusing all of your time and energy on one thing. It's funny in a lot of places, and there’s sex—lots of steamy sex that will have you squirming in your seat, and a surprise Dom you can’t help but root for.
The classic Faustian exchange takes on new existence in this convincing tale of a submissive woman trying to make up her mind (and soul) between two tops with their own singular qualities. Will our heroine choose success (and sex) in the abstract? or what appears to be true love? And sex.
