This marvelous narration takes the reader through the ins and outs of life as a Pet Care Professional. Dog, cat, and bunny lovers will all find moments they recognize as well as plenty of surprises. The writing is engaging, real, articulate ... in a word--BRILLIANT! My kindle's pages are marked all over with passages that had me in stitches. Mr. Jackson could surely make any profession or commonplace activity sound far more entertaining than it really is, but when the spirited cast includes these special dogs (and one alarming hamster in particular), it's even better.
Since this is a real life story, I don't know how we wrangle a sequel, but I certainly want to read more from this author!
Written in a comical and heartfelt way, we learn about the animals’ reactions to various situations and the way each pet formed their very own unique bond with him, and he with them. The author did a great job describing the vast personalities of these pets. I especially liked the comments he imagined them saying.
Overall, this was a fun read and I thoroughly enjoyed the author’s sense of humor. Of course, animal lovers will naturally be drawn to this book, rightfully so, but anyone who has gone through (has ever thought about or been forced into) a career change, will greatly enjoy this as well.
Composed of a series of vignettes, the author shares true stories of his work with animals. The tales range from mildly amusing to hilarious, with the odd sadness thrown in. He has a personable and entertaining style of writing that would appeal to a wide age-range of readers.
Throughout the book, I was greatly impressed by the compassion and patience Cee Tee shows towards his charges, plus forgiveness towards animal with temperament issues. ...I'm thinking he must have quite a lot of scars. For instance, he has a chapter titled "The Psychopaths" (a rabbit and a cat, to be precise).
My first job was as a kennel maid, which made this book of particular interest to me. I also used to keep rabbits that were all teeth and claws, and once tried offering a home to a rescue cat that was incurably homicidal (feeling great empathy with Cee Tee here).
Primarily, this is a book that dog owners will find incredibly entertaining. It's clear that Cee Tee loves his work and hasn't allowed redundancy (twice over) to tip him over into despondency. In fact I'm guessing, from some of his quips about the bank, that in hindsight he sees his new job as a liberation from an organisation he no longer respects.
However, it is obvious he respects animals and that he revels in his hours spent in the countryside rather than behind a desk in a stuffy office. He might end some days muddy, scratched, and smelling of damp dogs and rabbit wee but -- what the hell? -- the fellow is happy.
My only complaint about this book is that it is too short. Then again, the author does describe himself as "a bit of a short-arse, with a short attention span".
Part of the secret of the success of this book is that the author uses great skill to present his favourite ‘moments’ in a manner we can all share. We feel his joy and pain because, to a certain extent, we’ve all been there.
The author is also very good at building the characters of his stars. As a Brit of a certain age I remember Johnny Morris of ‘Animal Magic’ fame. He had the same skill and it’s a rare gift. It’s also a great comedy. Animals crack me up.
If you’ve handed your beloved dog or cat over to a pet professional and you’re jetting off on holiday, make sure you pack ‘Damp Dogs and Rabbit Wee’. It’ll make you appreciate your beloved pets all the more.
What a gem this is. It's entertaining and funny, but also poignant. You can really tell that the author has a love of animals and truly cares about his work. I love stories based on real life situations and this book gives an insight into the complexities of what at first seems a straightforward job.I must say I admire the way this man has made a successful career change, not only from bank manager to pet sitter, but to author as well-it's very well written. Read it yourself and it would make an ideal gift for any pet owner or animal lover.
