Re the guy she is seeing:
"...he left her cold as Chicago in January. He simply didn’t get her motor running." So why invite him to dinner for a third date? We later learn that no one has ever got her motor running.
Jason was a good attempt at creating an alpha male, but his behavior in the ludicrous plot destroyed his credibility. Also not appealing was the "I'm not good enough" serenade. Lather. Rinse. Repeat.
Imagine a murder investigation where neither of the people interviewing witnesses and suspects are police officers. Dumb down a Hardy Boys book and you'll be at the right level. Here's an example of Brinley's involvement in the investigation.
"Evidence. She needed to be more cognizant of that little detail." Bwahahaha!
The former owner of Brinley's house goes by two names which is not explained. You might find this confusing so you should know that Gail Denton and Mrs. Barnes are the same person.
Don't worry about any spoiler alerts. It couldn't be more obvious who the bad guy is. The villain has a terrible case of verbal diarrhea and immediately confesses to two murders and two attempted murders when caught. This is odd, since he was able to cover up the murder for twenty years before this moment.
The mayor is a big meany who complains about the high cost of fingerprinting. What???
2.5 stars rounded to 3 because there were no glaring editing errors. I really hope I got this book for free.

This book was an enjoyable read with romance, action and adventure, all taking part. Brinley, an elementary school teacher, becomes involved in a murder case when her address is found clutched in a murdered man’s hand. She has no idea who this man is and her neighbor Jason, an ex DEA agent, jumps in to offer his assistance in helping her find the answers she seeks. As the situation turns dangerous, Jason offers his protection to Brinley as well. As they follow the clues about the unknown dead man, Jason calls in help from law enforcement background teammates as backup, and little by little the case begins to unfold. Through it all Jason fights his demons, having been held prisoner by drug lords, he fears making a commitment to Brinley, the one person who make him feel again. Brinley is determined to get through to Kevin, refusing to allow him to allow his past to dictate the future she knows they could have if he would just let go… and learn to trust. HEAT RATING: 7 out of 10
Ex-DEA agent Jason Anderson is trying to rebuild his life after being held captive and tortured by a narc cartel. He was starting his security business, and with friends he's slowly coping, but he barely sleeps at night, alone, until his neighbor, Brinley Snow asked him over to join her for dinner, having admired him for a while. But the dinner was quickly interrupted when Jason's brother (who's a cop) asked Jason to invite the lovely Brinley down to the station for a chat. Someone was found dead, and in his pocket was the address of Brinley's house, which she bought not too long ago. Turns out the house has a cold case attached to it... a wife was murdered, and a husband was the prime suspect, but not enough evidence. Who was the dead man and why did he have the address? Then the house was broken into. Brinley has her own secrets, having fled the east coast under a harassment scandal. Then another woman was attacked, and a creepy admirer of Brinley keep showing up unannounced... But Jason is determined to protect Brinley from all threats...
It was clear the author did not bother research police procedurals, since Jason was out questioning suspects, with Brinley in tow! While it's not formal, neither are law enforcement! And why can't the local police deputize him, at least temporarily, if they really needed his help? He has NO AUTHORITY to do any investigation other than he's brother of a cop and had law enforcement experience! At least the red herrings are competent, which is why the rating wasn't any lower.
