She has since swum with sea lions, sharks and sea cucumbers and stood on spray-drenched cliffs over a seething sea as a seven-metre cyclonic swell surged in, shattering a shipwreck below.

Now Mai is grown. Her father is called to lead an army to a battle that he feels sure will be a defeat. If he goes to war, he will probably be blamed for the defeat and be executed. If he stays home, the emperor might send an army to kill the whole family for disobeying an order. Mai decides to help protect her families honor.. Her stepmother casts a spell to make Mai look like a man and she leads the army to the battle. At the camp, she proves herself a great fight and she easily beats the best warrior of the kingdom Prince Yi.
Prince Yi is under pressure to marry and produce an heir. This will be his last campaign until he fulfills his duties. Prince Yi is unhappy with the modern noble women with bound feet. He wants a woman warrior who is honest with her emotions and desires. When he meets Mao (Mai) at camp, he is amazed that Mao beats him. The two have daily battles until Prince Yi really respects Mao. He is even thinking about marrying Mao sister since Mao is such a great warrior.
This is a great twist on a couple fairy tales. I loved both Mai and Prince Yi. .
The story and setting are interesting, but it's really the characters, and their inner conflict and attraction to each other that drives the plot and interest of the reader. In a lot of ways, I'd say this book is more similar to Seven Daughters and Seven Sons by Barbara Cohen (which I absolutely love).
Just a warning to the reader, this book does have mentions of lustful behavior and men taking advantage of prostitutes, and a coupling described in moderate but short detail between two married individuals.
Based on the stories of Cinderella and Mulan, Mai’s dance is the morning kata her father taught her. For those who may not know, a kata is a routine of moves practiced by those in martial arts. They are meant to build confidence and balance physically and spiritually.
This is the fifth and easily my favorite of the books I have read in this series so far! Neither the step-mother nor her half-sisters are completely horrible. Instead of insta-love, Mai and Yi had friendship that grew. In fact, because of the deception, Yi was confused about his feelings for his roommate and friend!
Imaginative retelling and I look forward to many more in the series.
Note: while I was given this book as a gifted ARC, my opinions are my own and are given freely.

This was a GENIUS mix of Mulan and Cinderella! Advertised as Cinderella completely threw me for a loop the entire book... yes to the very end. With the combination you never really knew which part would happen next or how it would all wrap up! Happy ending, of course, but as a Disney’s Milan FANATIC, this was my cup of tea!
Please please please read, and if you are unlike me, having to read everything IN ORDER (it’s a mental thing) you WOULD be able to read these first two as stand alone novels. ON TO THE NEXT: Fly
Note: I found this and purchased on my own, I did NOT get paid or compensated with a copy of any of this author’s work. At the time of purchase it was on sale as she was taking everything off Kindle Unlimited, but I am happy to pay for those I was not able to purchase on sale (books 7-11)
First off I'm not going to give you any spoilers for the book except what this book reminds me of Cinderella and Mulan mixed together with a little bit of something else. I did enjoy it it was epic it I enjoyed it I liked how he went to the battle scenes I like the way how the two characters were developed so well you got really into the book. I think you would enjoy this too because it has a new spin on an old story or told but I think it's a it's a nice nice book I read the two before it and enjoy them too and I'm looking for the next one so yes I did enjoy it
Truly, this book is one of the best re-imagined fairy tales I have read in a long, long time. I look forward to reacquainting myself with her other novels.
Top international reviews
Anyway, I really enjoyed this story and highly recommend it to all adults who like fairytale retellings, or stories with a twist of romance, magic and a "happy ever after"!
NB I received a complimentary copy of this book, but I always give an HONEST review based wholly on my own opinions
Mai's stepmother wasn't as cruel, her daughters were half sisters to the heroine and not at all malicious, the story felt far more real than Cinderella, and instead of a meek house servant who talks with animals, Mai proved herself to be a fierce warrior and strategist impossible not to like.
I have also grown fond of Yi, the Prince of Swords and the future emperor. Although he was self assured, he had real feelings, and truly cared for others, even when he didn't show it. I really liked how Mai and Yi's relationship changed from foes to training partners to friends, from inseparable best friends to impossible love interests.
Although not my favourite in the series, I do enjoy all the books, and this story in particular stood out from the others, as the heroine was also the hero, and she herself was no wielder of magic, but achieved everything by her own skills.
I would recommend this book to everyone.
Meet a strong independent girl in what looks like a Feudal period in China. Trying to support her father and keep him safe when the emperor calls for more soldiers. Her stepmother is more than willing to let her do it. A great growth of characters that also shows the benefit of working hard to keep skills strong.
A wonderful story that sucked me in and kept me hooked throughout. If you have read any of her other retolds there are a couple of fun little surprises that will make you smile.
I picked this up after reading the re-tell of Sleeping Beauty, which I loved.
Ms Carlton has a brilliant imagination, "outside the box" really doesn't begin to cover it. Cinderella in drag, war tactics and sword fights never featured in the pantomimes, but the story flows from one highlight to another to another and did not falter at all.
The characters are strong, the incompetent baddie general is sufficiently rascally to promote boos and hisses (although probably not "he's behind you!").
I have found a new favourite author who has strong leads who don't rely on feminine wiles - they are just strong people. She deserves to succeed as well as Cinderella. I will be buying more.
Everyone knows the original fairy tale, but the imagination and skill of Demelza Carlton makes the story so much more than it was. I won't spoil the journey for you; just get this book, and the others in the series - you won't regret it!
Beautiful characterisation and fast-paced storytelling make for a great read.
Totally loved the different view of this book, did read it in one sitting. Flows very well without being rushed at any points. Definitely a recommended read 😊
