As for Perni, she has way too single minded a focus, and in true soap opera fashion, no one wants to explain why she should be inside instead of out. Why not tell her what a pet-on-file is and why he was dangerous, or realize why she is dangerous to him. If she really wants to see downtown, how about show it to her, get her curiosity out in the open and get it over with. As to the necklace it is only "by treaty" supposed to be used if she performs magic. She did not use magic until they tried to collar her. Her story was the best, but still way too much soap opera. So many chances to explain or reason with her are missed and rules are arbitrarily tossed out.
As for the rest, it appears everyone has a secret and no one is telling anyone what it is, that is fine, but the reader needs to be clued in. I feel like I just read the outline of a story, not the actual story. And as for cliff hangers on each episode, that is more likely to cause me to stop reading than to come back. It displays an authors lack of ability to close a part of the story yet leave enough interest to cause the reader to look for the next edition. I may read the next book, but if it is anything like this one, color me gone.
1 - Pernie - Awesome - I loved the development and growth and am looking forward to more of her in the future.
2 - Orli and Altin - Not the main thrust of this installment - Although they were involved enough to keep me interested to see what happens next.
3 - Roberto - While Roberto isn't my favorite character in the series and will always seem to be a supporting actor at most - this book appeared to be his story. If you like characters that are tough guy, former military and while not necessarily the most brilliant guy at times - is always there for his friends - then you will like this book a lot. To me this book was Roberto's moment to shine and I think he did.
4 - The queen, Black Sander, and the Marchioness - great characters as always - the first still coming across as self serving, the latter two - the necessary evil to make the story work.
Overall I enjoyed the book and am looking forward to the next. While I don't rate it as highly as some of the others, I still give it four stars and recommend the book and the series. This is a great hybrid of Space Opera and Fantasy... If you haven't read the Galactic Mage do so ASAP and you wont stop until you have read all of Dalton's books.
Thank you Mr Daulton for keeping the series alive and I look forward to the next.
What irritates me most is not tying up any of the story lines. He is leaving his endings just like the old Saturday Serials I remember as a kid.....
Hero gets pushed off a cliff and suddenly.....stay tuned next week for the next episode..
I don't want to leave this with a negative because I loved the way Mr. Daulton combined our world of Machines and other world of Magic...excellent job!!
