Editorial Reviews

From the Author

I wrote the book as a lesson and result of the time I served as the consul of Israel in Boston. New England is among the most enjoyable service posts for an Israeli diplomat. Beautiful landscapes, great weather for those who come from deserts and tropical weather and don't mind three month a year covered with snow, and most pleasant- sometimes weird people.

The liberal open atmosphere attracts people from all over the world to special communities mainly in New Hampshire and Vermont that were in the Consulate territory. Dreamers, prophets, world fixers, and some lunatics. A number of them would visit the Consulate every now and then. Being the Israeli Consul, the official representative of the state and the President, takes a lot of sensitivity and sometimes wisdom from you. Not to offend anyone, but not to fall, you and your country, for false stories. I knew how to handle those visitors.

My most remarkable case was that young lady who entered the Consulate on false claim- asking to see me for special visa extension request- and then refused to leave. It was a few years after an Israeli diplomatic crate, on its way to Israel, was mistakenly opened in the airport of Rome in Italy, and a cuffed man was found inside. That young woman begged and insisted that she should be shipped to Israel in such diplomatic crate.

According to her story, she was a part of an Israeli student union In MIT- perhaps the most prestigious Ivy League university in our area. The student union was managed by two famous Israeli students, sons of well-known right wing families in Israel. Now, she said the union is blamed for spying in the U.S., and it's our duty to smuggle her out of the country. The procedure on such cases is clear and sharp- we are not allowed to deal with it. I however couldn't resist calling one of these students. He clearly said that not only she is not part of the union, but as a matter of fact, he never heard her name before.

The desperate woman, a little more relaxed, asked to get out to buy some cigarettes. She left the Consulate and never came back.

Years later, that MIT student leader became a senior minister in the Government. The next time I heard the young woman's name, was when her appointment as the head of that Minister's office was announced.
In my book I tried to understand what could have been the true story behind that incident, or perhaps behind few other stories of this nature that you may have heard.

I couldn't believe how amazing this book was. From the first word, to the last, I was hooked. The ups and downs, the romance, and thrills, they became apart of me. It is very rare for an author to encapsulate so many different themes and genres into one story, but this author managed to achieve this.

After reading the author's bio, I thought "no wonder this book is amazing". The author managed to bring in his life experiences into his stories. These political thrillers are as real as they get, and I wouldn't be surprised to see this in a theater one day.

I put this book on my Top 5 political thrillers, and definitely one of my most recommended to my friends.

Ever since getting a kindle, I’ve been on a mission to read anything and everything from up and coming authors, which pointed me towards Oren Sanderson’s “Dancing Bear”. I was intrigued by the premise, so I got it and was not disappointed. It’s not an epic book with 1,000 pages, but it doesn’t have to be, because what’s contained here is a straight up action thriller. Well, it’s not all action, there’s a good plot setup, and action that ensues amidst mystery, good dialogue and over the top sequences that rivals anything Stallone ever did on cinema.

Combining stiff political tones and still creating an interesting characterization is tough, but Sanderson found a way to mix politics with action, without letting the dialogue slip or lose focus on tinges of comedic balance here and there. David (the main character) is definitely a believable person, and when you can relate to the character and have been enthralled with a woman (in this case Kate) you strap in for what comes next, and I wasn’t disappointed. I loved it. I thought this was a tightly wound thriller, on par with many Hollywood movies, and other spy books. It’s short, but it’s packed with emotion, action, and political leanings that is not too unlike modern society today. I recommend it.

I love espionage and spy novels and Dancing Bear is a definite must-read. Filled with thrills and suspense, the story grips you the moment you begin reading. There's certainly some twists that you don't see coming, but that's for you to see for yourself. David falls in love with the mysterious woman that arrives at the Israeli consulate office in Boston. She goes by the name of Kate Beaver and is claiming many things. David is unable to stop himself from helping her, and when he makes that decision he finds himself being sucked into a world where no one can be trusted. Oren Sanderson writes a well written spy novel. If you love this genre this book comes highly recommended.

I love a good read and I must say that this book is a definite must read. From the beginning I was slowly drawn into the world of David and his ploy to help a mysterious woman. Truthfully the story is really captivating. I absolutely loved how the author introduced the characters; it is almost as though we are supposed to be suspicious of everyone from the beginning. Because of this the book is very intriguing and suspense filled. The plot was also well thought out and the story flowed effortlessly with twists and turns you would never see coming. I truly loved the book and the way the author managed to capture my attention and keep it. I loved that the author used a very popular political background that most of us are familiar with and can follow. It was the idea of espionage and spies that added that extra flair that made the book great. This book goes down as a must read in my book and when you read it you will want to read more.

I am a huge fan of thrillers of any type. I get sucked into books like this. If you've ever watched the TV show 24, you know the kind of "sucked in" that I mean. It takes you down roads that you didn't think were possible. You think you understand what is going on, just to find twist after twist. What seems to be such an innocent love in the beginning makes you think twice about who you can trust.

If you're a fan of 24, Blacklist, or any type of thriller similar to those, you will LOVE this book.

Once you pick it up, you won't want to put it down. Seriously.

Dancing Bear is an interesting book with many twists and turns. The characters are different and I had some difficulty following the twists and turns. I have always thought Robert Ludlum wrote some very convoluted stories but I was able to follow them and tie it all together. Dancing Bears left me with a couple of dead ends that picked up again on some other "streets" and I never was able to tie some of those dead ends together. Overall it was well worth the read but I do believe the plots and subplots could have been fleshed out a little more. Don't overlook this book just because I could not follow smoothly. That may be the intent of Mr. Sanderson all along! I will read his future books. :-)

For better or worse, Spy novels tend to be similar in many ways. At first this book seems to follow that rule, but after reading it I realized that this book was actually pretty clever in many ways. It's original for sure with a story that gets deeper and more complex as you read. The writing is good and flows well compared to some spy novels I've read. The dynamic between David and Kate makes for a good story. I'd say that this is worth the read if your in the mood for an original spy novel.
