Jack closed off his heart after the war and death of his first family. Could he ever love again? Doubtful. But please read the book, find out for yourself what other tragedies Rita had to go through. Find out what Jack went through.
This is an emotional book so have tissues ready. I wholeheartedly recommend this book!
This novel takes place in 1869 in the Colorado Territory. Rita Baxter dances in the chorus of a burlesque show in New York City. She has no family and cannot find any other job even though she is a trained ballet dancer. Unfortunately, a one day, as she was cooling off between her dances, she sees a murder and reports it to the police.
As it turns out, the killer is the right hand man of the head of the dangerous Whyos gang. The police suggest that Rita leave town before they come to kill her.
Rita sees an ad for the Matchmaker & Co. office in town and goes there to find a mail order husband. She has always dreamed of getting married and having children, and this seems to be a good answer to all of her problems. Margaret Selby, the owner of the matchmaking business suggests that she choose Jackson Colton, a former Army captain who is currently a miner in the Colorado Territory.
Rita chooses him and writes back to him and, then, begins the long journey to meet her new husband. They are very happy even though Rita still worries about the Whyos gang.
As you probably guessed by now, a man does find Rita and attempts many times to kill her. Her husband and his wonderful friends work very hard to protect her. In fact, Jackson’s friends are kind and gentle in a rough manly way. However, after meeting Rita, they have already put in their requests for mail order brides. I am, very much, looking forward to reading their stories.
I admit that I am a sucker for mail order brides because this is something that actually happened in the Old West. I assume that not all of these marriages were a success. However, I love these books because they all end in a happily ever after.
This book is a romance, and the author does a wonderful job showing how this couple meets and falls in love. Along with that, this book, also, has danger as the Whyos man attempts to murder Rita. This adds some excitement to the book.
This book is, what I call, a “feel good.” It is a quick read with a lots of nice clean romance with some danger thrown in. I like to read “feel good” books because I enjoy the books as I read them.
I usually read romantic suspense books which are very dark, deep and longer books. Even though they have happy endings, they take a lot out of me as I read them. Therefore, I often need to read a shorter “feel good” book to lighten my mood in between..
Cynthia Woolf is one of those authors I use to pick me up after I read one of my longer, darker books.
I highly recommend this book.
