|New from||Used from|
"This is a great read for young boys and girls. An exciting story with captivating illustrations, Dancing with Bulls will leave the reader dreaming of adventures in ancient Crete."
"I really liked your book! I liked it because: 1. I liked the pictures; 2. I liked when they were transported back in time. 3. I liked when they danced with the bulls, too.
Anyways, I hope you make more!"
--Alex (age 7)
From the Author
My wife and I have been to Greece five times. We have visited Knossos Palace on the island of Crete and communed with the people who lived there in the distant past. This book, based loosely on a fresco at Knossos, is an attempt to bring to life what could have happened 4,000 years ago.
Janelle Carbajal did a beautiful job of illustrating the book.

I enjoyed Dancing with Bulls, even though I'm not the target audience, and I think most elementary-age students would like it too. The story is well-paced, the descriptions clear, and--other than the time-travel element--its completely believable. Hopefully Alan Cook will write more about Mason and Matthew, maybe filling in the mysterious previous adventure in Athens!
As for myself (because of course I had to read it after looking through the AMAZING pictures!) I loved the combination of history, myth, and adventure. As the main characters, Matthew and Mason, face dangers in the bull ring, it's great to see them mature and exhibit a roller coaster of emotions including fear, empathy, bravery, and love.
Dancing with Bulls was such a fun read for both me and my younger cousin! It's not difficult, but if you're like me, then it'll take twice as long to read because I spent so much time staring at the BEAUTIFUL illustrations! The colorful scenes really make your imagination travel far and wide.
I definitely recommend this book for boys and girls who have (or are in need of) an adventurous spirit! It's the perfect gift for young readers.
This is the first book in a possible series. During the book, the boys allude to a previous adventure, which gave me the impression that DANCING WITH BULLS is the second book. It isn't. The book sets up these characters as if they had been on adventures already. In my opinion, for the first book in the series, the boys should display more amazement with their new circumstances. Instead, Matthew and Mason already have a "been there, done that" attitude coming into this story. It allows Cook to get right on into the action but deprives the reader of the magical moment when the boys enter a new world for the first time.
The book is easy and short enough for younger kids to grasp. It has danger, adventure, and a little romance thrown in. And it exposes kids to an ancient civilization and culture they may not have heard of before. The illustrations are wonderful and will give the reader a sense of a different place and time.
