I can relate to well to Emily's journey away from the LDS Church (Mormon), although I was spared the tragic abuse she suffered. However, I could see myself in her quest to be more obedient, more perfect, more "righteous" by seeking "the mysteries of the Gospel". I too ran across bizarre healers, polygamists, and those seeking to "make their Calling and Election sure." Hey, I figured if I was going to work hard to go to Heaven, I wanted to have all the necessary knowledge and "ordinances".
Emily shares her story in a delightful, self-deprecating manner so we love her, we laugh with her, we totally "get" her and why she does the crazy things she does.
In the moment of clarity, when she comes to realize what she has been doing to herself because of what was done to her, we all rejoice, we all feel lighter, and know that her clarity has some how impacted our clarity about our own life.
You don't have to be a former-Mormon to appreciate her trials and struggles. This could be about any structured organized religion. It is a book about all the magical thinking and suspended disbelief that all of us struggle with.
The stories are amazing and fascinating and as someone who was raised in the Mormon church, I can confirm how easy it can be to listen to all of the "authoritative voices" instead of that clear one that eventually found its way to consciousness within Emily.
Be prepared to go on an emotional roller-coaster, but also be truly inspired. This book is a must read, and has been an inspiration to me to make lemonade with the lemons the world gives to me. Phenomenal.
