I've read a lot of omegaverse (MF/MM), so I was curious how this FF would be in comparison. Charlie (female lead) is a for-hire mercenary. She's has been hired by Kal, the lead Alpha from the planet she grew up and escaped from. Going back to her sort-of home world, she meets with Kal and is surprised she is a woman. They organize a plan for Charlie to rescue a missing Omega, and while working together, Kal and Charlie get together. I won't give anything away, but Charlie is a little surprised, lol. The ending leaves us with a huge cliffhanger, and multiple deaths, so I kind of need book 2, asap!! Though, I'm willing to wait, since I love a good cliffhanger. It allows me to go back right before book 2 and re-read book 1 all over again. :)
Well written, not over-the-top fantasy--there is a strong level of "normal." The dialogue and narrative are well balanced and the characters are grounded, which I love in these types of genres. The two female leads are both strong, which is a little different for an omegaverse, but I have to say, I LOVED it. The fact that Charlie wasn't overly submissive was great. She had a clear voice, total strength, and was willing to go up against her Alpha. Love the variation! I'd highly recommend, but beware if you are a cliffhanger hater.
That being said:
Excellently written specimen of the genre with characters that are true to their roles. The pair's chemistry may be a liiitle overplayed but it works. Good banter and action. If one squints hard they may see some Firefly influence but I don't know if it is intentionally.
Recommended for those that understand what they are getting themselves into.
Hope to see a part 2 soon.
Altho it is a FF pairing and I was expecting an les sci fi that’s not all it is. I was surprised to find out the Kal wasn’t everything I had thought she was. I enjoyed having my mind expanded and came to care for the characters. The steamy sex scenes were done really well and altho a ‘male’ appendage isn’t my thing I was able to enjoy other aspects of the scene that really did work me, hot dominate sex is sexy when well done, and it was well done. Also having a a Kal as a female totally worked for me as well. It also worked for this storyline, after all these people are aliens. I did find the strong female Alpha Kal and the way it was written was really well done. I would read book 2 and am looking forward to it.
Charlie is a mercenary who takes the jobs: the hard jobs. This time the Alpha God of Kander is asking for her crew specifically for a job. Kander does not look kindly on humans and Charlie is all human. Her crew is a mix as Starr is half human and half Kalmar and Raakor is Hurr (definitely not human).
Now they find out that they are wanted to rescue a kidnapped Omega, but no further details. The payout is huge, but Charlie feels like she is missing something. The one thing she is not missing is the tremendous attraction she is feeling towards the female Alpha God.
The attraction is mutual and undeniable. Charlie may grapple with the decisions Kal, the Alpha God, made to get to where she is, but her desire has no qualms.
Now all she has to do is rescue the Omega, keep her team alive, keep the Alpha happy, and collect the bounty. What could go wrong?
Dancing in the Darkness (Luthor Publishing, B07QDR8SHR, 2019) is the first book in “The Alpha God” series by Lexa Luthor and I am already addicted! This story has so many twists, turns, drama, and “holy sugar” moments that I am so glad I do not have to wait to read the next one. (laugh)
If you have not started this series, you need to. Seriously! I know y’all are remembering a year ago when I did not read science fiction at all - you are thinking I am a pod person. I know. I know. Charlie is amazing. I love her character. The complexity of her life is very similar to the trials and tribulations that immigrants go through here and Luthor writes well-drawn parallels.
Romance, sci-fi geek speak, murder, gun battles, and drama, this story has them all. I will warn you that it ends on a cliff-hanger. Not just any ‘ole cliff-hanger either, an “oh my sugar cookies” cliff-hanger! Luthor has me all stirred up and isn’t that what we want all writers to do to us? See you at the door….
I received an ARC of this book and I am writing a review without prejudice and voluntarily.
