Dancing with Dharma is an especially informative and, for the most part eminently readable collection of essays that explore the conjunction of Buddhism, meditation and mindfulness on the one hand and dance and movement on the other. The contributors, some practitioners, some theorists, are knowledgeable and the anthology is well organized and comprehensive. The subject matter, however, is perhaps not for the neophyte. To fully appreciate the pedagogic value or the inspirational effect of the book the reader would benefit from some basic grounding in the subject matter. Nevertheless, Dancing with Dharma is a valuable contribution to the scholarship in the area.

This anthology brings two seemingly separate disciplines, Buddhist/Dharma practice and movement/dance, into alignment and highlights some of their fundamental similarities in a way that is both refreshing and exciting to me as someone who practices the Dharma and enjoys dancing and movement based practices. Some well known Dharma teachers (Charles Genoud, Reginald Ray, Willa Miller) as well as others offer insights and experiences via short essays that are grouped into different sections (eg Movement, Ritual, Guided Practice). With the encouragement and guidance of these essays, I look forward to continue weaving movement/dance, ritual, and Dharma in my own life as a way to discover what it means to be human and the possibilities that this human life have to offer.

This book offers a series of rare insights into the increasingly relevant intersection of dharma, dance, and community--for Buddhists and dancers alike. It is baffling that this kind of project has not previously been attempted, considering the broad and burgeoning influence of Buddhism in contemporary Western dance and movement practices. Harrison Blum and the writers in this volume offer a great snapshot into what it can mean to integrate an embodied spiritual tradition into a dedicated dance practice, and vice versa. They provide a variety of exemplars for doing so, and give rich accounts of the obstacles and triumphs of this kind of work.

The content of this book finds a middle ground between pragmatism and transcendence, offering useful tips while gesturing toward enlightenment. Crucially, this is not just a volume of critiques. Many of the pieces offer practical instructions and insights from the innovators of different dance modalities. While thoughtful and reflective, this is NOT a purely academic work and would be useful for enthusiasts, scholars, and fans alike.

I was fascinated by the rich teachings contained in this anthology. Mr. Blum has assembled a wonderful group of writers and teachers who illuminate the connections between contemplative practice and creative movement. As someone who is not usually drawn to dance, I felt moved by the writings contained in this book. It opened me up to the possibilities of what dance can be. particularly when aligned with dharma practice. Recommended.

Dancing with the Dharma is a lovely, eclectic collection of essays that marries moving and Buddhism in a wholly original and compelling way. The collection, thoughtfully edited by Harrison Blum, embraces the gamut from theory to practice. It points the ways in which Buddhist thought can both guide and emerge in a sacred movement space.
