Editorial Reviews

Not only did Ahmad Jamal call Eric Reed "one of my very favorite pianists," not only has he worked with such talents as Wynton Marsalis, Jessye Norman, Patti Labelle, Quincy Jones and others but he has composed film scores for Eddie Murphy and Tim Story and serves as musical director for The Alvin Ailey Dance Theater. Somehow he still finds time to teach, perform and cut his latest disc, "The Dancing Monk." Here the genius of Monk is refracted through the prism of Eric's own creativity resulting in 'thoughts on' rather than a 'tribute to' one of the true titans of jazz.

Format: Audio CD
This wonderful recording by Eric Reed and his trio accomplish a very difficult feat---making Monk's tunes sound like Monk, but also offering original takes on the music. What we have here is a trio at the top of their game--great music, fantastic swinging improvisations, and heartfelt ballads. My only complaint is that the CD could have accomodated a few more tunes. Super playing and the sound, by Katherine Miller, is top notch. One of the best Monk tributes I have heard.

Format: Audio CD
Eric Reed has successfully met the challenge of tackling some of the best tunes in jazz written by one of its most idiosyncratic composers, Thelonious Monk. There is no attempt to mimic Thelonious Monk the pianist. Reed simply plays the hell out of Monk's music, putting his own subtle stamp on some of Monk's most famous tunes: Ask Me Now; Ruby My Dear; Pannonnica; 'Round Midnight; Blue Monk, and more.

Reed has wonderful chops and a subtle, but solid, sense of swing. His improvisations on the tunes are so fresh that the tunes might have been written yesterday. The whole trio has a syncronicity that is almost telepathic. This album will be a wonderful addition to the collection of any fan of Monk, his music, and the jazz piano trio format.

When I first heard to one of the selection, I just automatically assumed that this was perhaps an unreleased recording of Thelonious Monk himself - well, my ears were opened - Mr. Eric Reed has selected some wonderful pieces by Thelonious to record in Monk's style. This is my first introduction to Mr. Eric Reed. Bravo!!
