All the reviews on this amp were for guitars. So I took a gamble on purchasing this for my violin. And...

I love it! Its cute. And a little bigger than I thought. Quite solid too, even if it made out of plastic. Sound wise, very nice, and warm sounding for my violin.

I highly recommend this amp, for others who have an electric violin, and who are looking for a starter amplifier.

So...

Thanks a lot Danelectro for such a cute amp! And good luck to whomever is browsing.

P.S.

Recommend getting the ac adapter.

Updated November 1, 2011: Well now my "good" Honeytone amp has developed the same issues as the two that were bad out of the box. It mutes momentarily on every strum. This is a real shame because I like the amp, but the speaker is useless when this happens. Others have the same complaint (see the one star reviews on different colors of this model) so this must be a common problem, as I am 3 for 3 getting defective units. At least the Danelectro DH1 Hodad Mini Amp amp I got to replace the other two defective units still works!

Original review:
I have ordered three of these from Amazon, two black ones from this product page and a yellow one from Danelectro N10Y Honey Tone Mini Amp in Yellow. The second and third were defective. These are fun and the clip on the belt convenience is great, with or without headphones. But obviously there are some quality control issues.

I liked this convenient little amp so much that a couple days after it arrived (for use at work with headphones) I ordered a yellow one for practice at home where I could use the speaker. Unfortunately, right out of the box it had the fade in and out sound when using the speaker that other reviewers mentioned on the other product page (see the one star reviews for Danelectro N10A Honey Tone Mini Amp in Aqua ). This happened using battery power or the DC adapter. At first I thought my cord might be bad. So I checked this by using another cord and then another guitar.

In my opinion...This is the best amp in this category. I know people who have the Marshall and the Fender. I plugged into my little HoneyTone and I had the best sounding micro amp hands down. They were both amazed with the sound. They said "well mine was only $45 and "mine was only $40." Too bad for them. I told them mine was $20 since it doesn't say Marshall or Fender, I only had to pay 1/2 for a better sounding amp. If you are looking for an amp with 1 or 2 watts, and know what to expect from a micro, this amp does not disappoint

UPDATE 2014: This little amp is still going strong. And it's not because it hasn't gotten used! It's just so handy when I only have a few minutes to play

This micro amp is a real blast in more ways than one. And it is NOT a toy. Don't be misled by the price--this is a real amp based on stompbox electronics, and while it may not be a Marshall stack, it is more than adequate as a highly portable practice amp as well as a performance amp for small spaces. It is certainly loud hough to evoke complaints from my neighbors in adjoining apartments.

I bought this amp for use durng harmonica practice. To this end, I use the belt clip to mount it on my hip. Then I just patch in my mike, twiddle the controls, and go to town. The tone has been fairly pure although, with a mike at least, I can also get some pops, crackles, and squeals. This is pretty typical for anyone amping a harp, so the Honey Tone is not at fault. In general, this amp is pretty forgiving of the input. I've used it with a high-impedance mike (Astatic JT-30), a low-impedance mike (Behringer XM8500), and electric guitar (Fender Stratocaster). It handles these without noticeable signal loss.

What is this amp exactly? My guess is that Danelectric took the circuitry for its overdrive stompbox, added a 1-watt amplifier circuit, and put the whole shebang into a retro case. The result is quite appealing. And the overall look and feel is one of quality. The case is solid albeit plastic. The three controls (volume, tone, and overdrive), while not detented, have the smooth control that you tend to get on better components. The input 1/4-inch jack and the mini jack headphone output are all solid. Someone in Danelectric had a sense of humor in touting the unit's "leather" strap, though. It is more decorative than useful.

If you can operate an overdrive stompbox, then you know how to work this amp. The volume control is obvious.

This little box puts out amazing sound. Every time I use it I am seriously blown away. The sustain and tone are far beyond expectations for a $20 amp (or even one costing 10 times as much), and it delivers a wide range of different sounds with a twist of the nobs. ONE IMPORTANT CAVEAT: buy an external power supply. While the Honeytone comes with batteries, you will not fully appreciate the sound unless you plug it in. I've had three of these little beauties (gave two away) and every one was the same: with batteries, the sound is anemic and cuts out frequently, but pug it into a wall socket and it flies!
